Warner bros go Bluray exclusive
NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Time Warner Inc's (TWX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Warner Bros studio on Friday said it would exclusively release high-definition DVDs in Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) Blu-ray format, dealing a big blow to Toshiba Corp's (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) rival HD DVD technology.

It is already being talked about here: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=723226
I glad I didn't get the HD add on for the Xbox just before Christmas, was very tempted by the 5 free DVDs! I have no preference for which on wins but if it is to be Blue Ray it will need to fall in price before I will get it. |

Now where can you point me to the BR players at this price. And also region free. Region coding though, is another matter for now.

If I saw a HD-DVD player at £99 I'd be wondering why such a new technology is so cheap already (DVD players took several years to get to that sort of price) and would avoid it.

I can't, but offering low priced (and low spec) machines is what got HD-DVD into trouble in the first place. Toshiba are the only major manufacturer making HD-DVD players (the likes of Ventura are just re-badged early Tosh models) and by slashing the prices as they have done in the US, no other major manufactuer would even consider making players now as there is simply no money in it for them. £99 Blu-ray players will come, but you'll have to sit back for 12/18 months and let the early adopters have their fun.
Not sure how you can come to the conclusion that offering low priced hardware got them into trouble, remember while it was cheaper than Blu-ray at launch the hardware was certainly not "cheap". As for "low spec" well the E1 was 1080i and firmware updates have been adding features as they go (1080p to the XE1 for example) and every HD DVD player complied with the finished HD DVD spec from the word go unlike Blu-ray. Even now a HD DVD player is more than a match feature wise for any standalone Blu-ray player, there really is not a great deal of difference certainly not hundreds of pounds in some case. I do agree that the higher profit margins Blu-ray could offer would tempt third parties but is that really a good thing and I don't think £1000 HD DVD players was the way to go even if it meant Pioneer offering a player. I suppose you could look at it as by letting some manufacturers go price crazy it's helped sell hundreds of thousands of PS3's if only by the price difference, SONY comes off as the good guy and everyone else looks like they are gouging the consumer

Even now a HD DVD player is more than a match feature wise for any standalone Blu-ray player, there really is not a great deal of difference certainly not hundreds of pounds in some case. My opinion on this which I think it is difficult to argue with is that BluRay is technically superior but HD_DVD was here first and that it was capable as far as HD was concerned of producing results that more than met the demands of the viewing public. That's irrelevant though I want to be able to buy the films I want and though I was with Betamax originally I went for VHS, for similar reasons it now seems likely I will go with BluRay. I have to say as someone who's been holding off buying, I just want a winner whoever it is (or really cheap dual format players). |

Darren In practical terms they are the same but one is cheaper but has less studio support. So a couple of days ago I would have said look at the movies you like and see which studios provide most of your viewing content and go that way since I believed both formats were strong enough to be alive and kicking right through xmas 2008 and beyond. However with Warner going Blu in May the studio support as it will stand certainly favours Blu especially when Paramount will no doubt go Blu at the end of the year (they had a 18month HD DVD exclusive deal). The price of the hardware is higher for Blu but you could buy a PS3 which thanks to the gaming subsidy is the best value Blu capable player on the market and will remain so all year. That said if some HD DVD owners panic and dump players and collections you could pick up an un uber bargain which would tied you over until Blu prices hit the HD DVD level. |

Get a universal player then the dummy throwing contest between the manufacturers won't matter to you.

So at the end of the day it looks like Blu-ray is going to win just like VHS did in the early 80`s when we had VHS v Betamax

Darren The odds certainly point in that direction but we have to see what the fall out of the Warner decision will be, it may indeed dent consumer confidence in HD DVD despite it's price and features and increase momentum for Blu-ray. Judging from the small sample here we have talk of HD DVD owners selling up and others predicting the war is over and no need to even consider HD DVD as a viable option. I suspect if Tosh announce a dual player then the war is indeed over but if they continue support with $100-$200 players and ongoing releases from Uni and Para then they could still be an conditional surrender

Funny you should mention that, people are already talking about cancelling orders for HD DVD, returning one's they've just received or selling on Ebay.
It's started already I'll have to make a list of all the HD DVD movies I'd be willing to pay under a tenner or far less to own, even used

I was going to wait till the prices go down a little but I will not be rushing out to get one of the DVD players. I will wait and see I think before I get one. Dont want to get one the 3 years down the road the stop making one of then like they did with Betamax.
