I have had the new above equipment for a couple of months now. I have tuned my tv in and have a number of free digital channels on it However, on my DVD recorder i can only tune in the main five channels BBC 1 & 2 ITV Channel 4 and 5

Why?

I want to tune the recorder into digital so that I can record films and programmes from digital channels.

Can anyone help please

It might be a silly question but does the DVD recorder actually have a built in Freeview tuner?

Assuming it does then are the 5 channels you are getting digital or analogue? I suspect they are analogue in which case you need to select the digital tuner.

Unless the DVD recorder has a digital tuner then it won't obviously be able to record the tune the digital channels itself, nor record them.

However if it doesn't, you should be able to connect the DVD recorder to the VCR SCART on the TV which will then send an output of the channel you're currently watching on TV to the DVD recorder which it could then record. Obviously if you did this then you can only then record whatever the TV is currently tuned to and timer recordings could be a pain since the TV will need to be kept switched on and tuned to whatever channel you wanted to record.

Other solutions would be to replace the DVD recorder with one that has a digital tuner, or to add a digital set-top box and connect that to the DVD recorder so you have an independant source of digital TV that you can record from.

On my Samsung remote I press the TV/DTV button to get Freeview, you should get all the channel listings/guide then.

As said above you can only record the digital channels if you connect a recorder to your TV and then only the one channel you are connected to. Although you could watch the analogue/sky channels depending on how much kit you have.

It doesn't have a digital tuner. It might be able to record high quality digital video, but only if you send it that digital video from an external source. It can't record Freeview from its own tuner, only from an external one (STB, PVR, Sky, idTV, cable etc) connected via scart. Quite what Panasonic are thinking of releasing a new DVD recorder in August 2007 that only comes with an analogue tuner, when by then Whitehaven had already had its analogue TV reception switched off, is mind-boggling.

OP - depending how long you have had this recorder, I would seriously think about returning it and replacing it with one that comes with a Freeview tuner built into it. Obviously, as others have said, you can connect an external digital TV tuner to it via scart and record that way, but I get the feeling that you only have one source of digital TV at the moment, your Panasonic TV, which many people will tell you means (1) you can only record the digital channel that you are watching on your TV and (2) if you want to record digital TV while you are out you are going to have to leave your TV switched on.

If either of these two situations are going to cause problems, you either need to buy a second digital TV source (an STB would be the cheapest option) or replace the Panasonic with another DVDR that does include a digital tuner.

This model DVD recorder does not have a digital TV tuner built in. So there is no way that you can make it tune to the Freeview channels. the fact that your TV has Freeview has no bearing on this. The DVD recorder neither knows nor cares what type of TV it is connected to, nor for that matter that you even have a TV!

You therefore have three options.

1/ Buy a new recorder with Freeview built in. this could be a DVD or it could be PVR, just keep your existing DVD recorder for DVD playback.

2/ Buy a cheap Freeview set top box, hook that up to a SCART on the DVD recorder and set the recorder to record from the SCART input.

3/ Set the TV to feed the output of it's digital tuner back down the SCART to the recorder. Set the recorder to record from SCART.

Option 1 is the best as the recorder operates totally independently of anything else. Therefore it is far easier to set unattended recordings and generally just setting up a recording is easier.

Option 2 does allow you to make recordings independently of the TV. however it does mean faffing about setting two boxes. you have to set the freeview box to the channel you want to record and then set the recorder manually to record it at the appropriate time. Though some set top boxes do have timers and can send control signals to the recorder to select the channel and put the recorder into record automatically.

Option 3 is by far the worst. For one thing the TV may well have to be on all the time even when you want to record something while you are out. Though some TVs do have timers that can wake the tuner only out of standby which does at least mean the display stays off. However it is useless if you want to watch and record two different digital channels at the same time. You can only record what you are watching.

This is the best of your options providing he can afford it. The existing DVDR is still very useful for material he wishes to keep so it's not a wasted purchase - in fact a PVR with a separate DVDR is better than a DVDR with built in Freeview.

Hi Broadz I think you got manufacurer dyslexia! The OP's TV and DVDR are Samsungs not Panasonic! I agree that no manufacturer should now be supplying DVDR's without Freeview digital tuners. I think Philips also do this still. I would even go as far to say that this kit should have a big sticker on it that warns that it will not work after DSO.

Conversely Panasonic DVDR's I believe only have digital tuners.

I would consider adding a Thomson PVR which you can pick up for around £65 from places like Tesco at the moment.

It has a 160GB hardrive to record to which gives you about 70 hours recording time & has Twin Freeview Tuners built in, plus it's very easy to use with it's EPG. You can also record two items at the same time

I have one in addition to my Sky HD box, the Thomson just records Soaps.

Is it really that low in price? I know you quoted it but it seems so low that I wanted to make sure - if it is correct I'll have a look out for one for my parents.

Well spotted. Don't know what I was thinking of (I do actually - I was reading a thread on AV Forums from someone who had problems with a Panasonic DVDR and Samsung TV - as you say, Manufacturer Dyslexia).

That's still a really low price, I'll probably get one for my parents.

I think they are a great buy, almost as easy as Sky+/HD to use (just a bit slow when deleting a program from the drive)
& with the latest firmware it seems to be rock solid.

You can have it delivered or pick up from your local Tesco.

Cheers, Paul.
