Could AV Receivers distinguish front and rear sounds if a film gets shown on either a terrestrial or digital channel when watched via Cable or Satellite? I'm considering of buying one, but was wondering if an AV could separate front and rear sounds.

Most TV broadcasts, wherever they come from, are encoded in surround, so put the AV Amp into Dolby Pro-Logic mode (version II for best effect) and it'll work superbly..

If you are meaning can a receiver replay Dolby Surround from the above sources, then yes, all you need is a stereo feed from the source to the receiver with the appropriate decoder. The majority of DD receivers are capable of doing this.

Depending on the receiver you could have the choice of DPL/DPLII/DPLIIx/DTS Neo6, some receivers include cinema and music modes.
