I can remember we had choices in my high school. In primary school I always brought my lunch to school in a Thomas the Tank Engine blue lunchbox, then couple of years later it was a Action Man lunchbox and then in 1999 I had a Star Wars episode I lunchbox with young Anakin and Sebulba on it. The memories....

Anyway I can remember having quite often the curry in high school, this was before this healthy eating and Jamie Oliver rubbish started in schools.

Keep those lunchboxes - they can be collectable memorabilia of the future, especially the Star Wars one

10 John Player Special and a packet of biscuits.

Meat and Potato pie if you sold a couple of fags.

Lovely roasts and chicken fricasse but the rest was vile - mince with huge lumps of fat - I can't touch mince now, revolting fish fingers, baked beans, liver, veggies that were way overcooked

The puddings were nice, except the custard - ew

Burgers and chips were an improvement but still gross.

I wish I could have had Jamie Oliver dinners, they look gourmet compared to what I had.

I ended up going home for lunch, my parents didn't like the idea of me wasting money on such slop which was getting wasted.

They were called hedgehog's at my school.

We also had something called Beany nests that was supposed to be for the vegetarians, it was a foil container with piped mash round the edge, baked beans in the middle and cheese on top.

I used to hate school dinners and wouldn't eat anything. We used to have lemon meringue which tasted liked washing up liquid and ravioli

I loved school dinners at primary school but my secondary school's were gross.

My favourites were bangers and mash, roast dinners and of course the semolina with seedless jam, I can remember the taste now. Another fav of mine was cake and pink custard, delicious.

We also used to get freshly made chocolate ring doughnuts at breaktime, the chocolate was always runny, mmmmm.....

I never had school dinners, my mum used to send me off with lemon curd sarnies....but by the sounds of it, all the lumpy meals, I think she did the right thing! I was a fussy eater.

Close to that, cheese flan, boiled potatoes and baked beans. The fish and chips were OK as well.

I only had school dinners at primary school (about 30 yrs ago).
I can remember the lumpy mash and the chocolate pudding with chocolate custard for afters. I do remember a teacher sitting on each table and serving us the custard from big silver jugs and the coloured dishes and plates we ate from.
Oh happy carefree days

The nightmares return...

Unidentifiable lumps of meat swimming in grey gravy with fat floating on the top and vegetables boiled down to the consistency of glue. Being forced to eat it by the lunch hall assistant lady whose hair looked like a Playmobil person's. Brittle french bread "pizzas" you could lose a tooth in. Bright pink yoghurt that had surely never seen hide nor hair of an actual strawberry. Mashed potato with the skins left on...not in a retro Gordon Ramsay style either.

Why didn't Jamie Oliver come a few years earlier?! (My school was just down the road from the one he used for Jamie's School Dinners).

The awful mystery meat made me vegetarian for more than a decade after I left.

xx

I made this post pretty much a year ago so I'll just repost it.

"In Primary school Main Course had to be Turkey Cheese Toppers with Chips, loved that and still eat it today.

For desert we had this like Toffee pudding thing. It was Shortcrust Pastry (I think) with some sort of Caramel, toffee filling inside it. They served it with that awful instant custard that I loved as a child but won't touch now. When they mingled together it was heavenly, I'd love to find that today see if I still enjoy it."

My sister used to be in love with this weird grey meat pie thing, I honestly don't know why cause it was awful. We also had this pink custard that didn't really taste any different to yellow custard but kids are idiots so they somehow thought it was better.

I remember kinda liking Primary School Lunches but my secondary school ones, with the exception of the Pizza, were pretty bad and once I was old enough to get permission to leave school at Lunchtimes I'd go home or head to the local chippy.

There was these biscuits that they served a morning break that I was addicted to though. I think they were made on site and delicious. I remember begging my sis to bring some home once I'd left school. She left a long time ago now and ever since, I've been tempted to pay a pupil to get me some lol!

I still have school dinners now, mostly they're okay, except for anything containing lamb is a varient of the same product - eg the spaghetti bolognaise, burgers, curry are all the same just in a different shape with different accompaniments. Luckily the kitchen does an additional teachers' menu. The desserts are delicious though - chocolate pudding, jam sponge, shortbread with custard etc.

Love it, especially the pink custard Shame they don't do it anymore

I went onto packed lunches though because I got a sausage that was green inside, complained to the dinner lady and she said it was fine! She wasn't the one throwing her guts up the next morning (and I had only had a bit).

In high school, I just used to go to the chippy because we were allowed out (with written permission from parents of course )
