HD DVD players question
Hi
I am looking to buy a HD DVD player and have found one that says it will make standard dvds look almost as good as HD dvds. Is this a feature of all/most players? Thanx

Thanx ![]() As Nigel says there is a world of difference between even good upscaled SD to native HD but without any doubt the scaling chipsets used in the Toshiba range of HD DVD players punch well above their price range and are more than a match for similar priced mid-range DVD players from the major manufacturers. You will not go wrong with a HD DVD player for upscaling DVD and the bonus if that there are hundreds of HD DVD movies out there which look even better. You may consider a Blu-ray alternative, their players also have good quality scalers and take the PS3 it can play Blu-ray, upscale DVD and play games

Clangerette, it would be remiss not to tell you that there was a major announcement a few days ago which could ultimately decide the outcome of the 'HD format war'. That announcement being that Warner will become Blu-ray exclusive from May 2008, making the split of studios supporting Blu-ray over HD DVD 70/30. Many publications are now predicting that it is more likely that the Blu-ray format will win and that HD DVD will soon become obsolete. Of course there a few hundred movies already available on that format, and those might do you. However, if you are hoping to buy movies that are released in the next 6/12 months, HD DVD might not be the format to choose. I wouldn't rush your purchase if I were you unless you are in position where you can easily upgrade to another player should that situation arise.
