I have a PS3 connected via HDMI to an HD-Ready TV, so the picture's great, but then I have a £20 2.1 system connected via the headphone port on the TV providing the sound, so it could do with some improving!

I am looking for a 5.1 system with an optical input that I can use for the PS3 as I heard optical gives the best sound. It'd be nice if I could also plug my Wii (via the component cables) and XBMC into it too.

Can anyone recommend any systems that would be fairly nice to my pocket, I'm not exactly loaded at the moment!

Thanks a lot.

Nice entry model, but can be had for £350 with free delivery here.......

You will of course need the speakers to complete the system.

If this is over your budget and you just want something with a digital input for 5.1 surround, then the Yamaha RXV361/NSP110 package for just under £200 is good value for money.

£350 for an entry model, ouch! Didn't realise I'd be looking at so much.

Basically the entry model for the Onkyo range, one that gives you all the new HD audio formats.

You can get a 5.1 system for £50, but I wouldn't expect too much from it.

Well, it is only for a bedroom, so it doesn't need to be amazing. Something around the £100-150 mark would be fine.

Also, I may as well ask seeing as I'm new to all this home-theater lark, what would be the best way of connecting my PS3 for the best sound, optical, HDMI, or some other way.

Considering that Yamaha package was probably one of the lowest priced systems from Richer Sounds, your next stop will most likely have to be Argos or the supermarkets. To be honest you will be wasting your money, save up the extra £50.

Given your budget for the system I don't think you will have an option other than connecting via optical. This will give you DD5.1/DTS/DD+ via the PS3.

Thanks for that, the Yamaha package looks tempting.

I got really lucky, I got hold of a Sony HTSS1000 set up for £50. I was in exactly the same boat as you, I wanted 5.1, mainly for my gaming, though for films as well. The amp and speakers are 3 years old, but in immaculate condtion. It has 2 optical inputs so my skybox is also running through it and it outputs 1000 watts of power. I'm sure that many audiofreaks will scorn as it doesn't support 7.1 or trueHD surround sound, but it compliments and enhances my PS3 and sounds fantastic. Plus it is a slim amp so it doesn't dominate my room.

Good hunting, I'd recommend doing a search on Ebay, and then looking for reviews on what ever you find. I got my kit from a guy less then 5 miles away, so I didn't have to pay postage and I knew where to go if I needed any advice.

Exactly.

Especially as according to the specs in the manual it only consumes 110W. So where do the other 890W come from then?

I had a really bad experience trying to sort this out. Many All in ones do not have an optical input and if they do some dont output dts sound. Avoid panasonic for instance. After posting on here I took the advice of going to Richer sounds and they sold me an entry level Sony amp and Yamaha speakers. Came to £290 but really pleased with it.

I just upgraded to an Onkyo TX-SR507 and Jamo A102HCS5

So many more inputs than my old all in one and it sounds a lot better too
