I have received a call that showed up on the caller ID as +44 as the beginning number. I tried to check it online and did find out it is from Inner London UK. I called it a couple of times using the code to call the UK from the USA and get a message that I do not have the authority to call this number.

Why?

I received it twice, once in October and again in November just a day or so after the USA Thanksgiving Day. I would call it again if it wasn't for the inflated phone charge.

+44 is the IDD for the UK itself and doesn't related to any particular part of the UK, try posting more of the digits that followed.

What did the caller say when you answered (if you answered)?

Why were you charged if you were not connected?

I don't know about US->UK phonecalls but from the UK you can easily call the US for 0.5p min.

I wonder if this is a new scam.

Get a premium rate number, then make random calls abroad where the receipient is most likely unaware of the premium number prefixes. Either hang up quickly or leave a cryptic message and hope the callee is curious enough to call back.

If you're not too greedy there's a good chance that no one will ever become aware of your scam.

From what you say, it looks like you mean the UK number showed up on your Call ID as 44207xxxXXXX. That's a standard UK geographic number and you should have had to pay your standard US to UK international rate to call it back, not a premium rate of any sort.

You would have had to dial 01144207xxxXXXX to call it back.

Is that what you did?

Also try google'ing the number, you might find who it is.

The firm I work for uses 0207 numbers as caller ID, but if you call them back it comes up a dead line. Very Useful!

It is an inner London telephone number. I was told that by one of your phone companies, but they could not tell me the name of the person who has that phone number.

PM reply on the way - you dialled the number incorrectly (you should have omitted the leading zero of the UK area code).

If you asked them what +44 was and they replied "Inner London" they were wrong, as I stated before +44 is the international dialing code for the UK.

The strict Inner/Outer demarcation was lost sometime ago, "020 7" and "020 8" numbers are generally inner/outer but not necessarily. "020 3" numbers can be anywhere in London.

I went to a BT (British Telecommunication) web site and it came up as Inner London.

Beautiful thing about my Panasonic Model KX-FND331 Fax/Copy machine is that it prints out the Caller ID list.

The number I check was made October 10th, 2007 @ 6:11 pm. That came up as Inner London UK.

The second number was made November 23rd, 2007 @ 10:50 am.

The two numbers are different.

PM me if you want to enttire number.

I really don't care what the whole number is, +44 is not and never has been inner or any part of London.

As to the original question: Why is it that I call the numbers that showed on on the caller ID as the the instructions I have in our local phone books and I get a message that I am not authorized to call those numbers?

If you are calling from a mobile (cell phone), the network might block outgoing international calls unless you ask them to allow it. Maybe, the telephone provider that you use has the same policy?

I made the calls via land line. My mobile phone won't until I have it set up to do so. I don't know what charges Tracfone has for international calls via mobile phone. Would have been nice to have been here when the call was placed. Or they could have left a voice message at least.

Unless I am calling someone's mobile phone there in the UK. Then their carrier may not allow the US phone caller through.

020 747 85562
London
Section: Codes in Range 1000-1999 (Mainly Geographic, Convention B3)

Number 020 747 85562 is potentially valid.

Oftel records show that numbers starting 020 7478 are allocated to BT. Note that due to number portability if an individual number has moved to a different operator this information is not publically available. Oftel's last recorded change for this number range was in May 1999.

A table of the code allocations for other numbers starting 020 is available

020 747 85562 may be on one of the following exchanges in this area:

London (inner) 020 7

The +44 is the number I would have to use in order to access any and all United Kingdom phone numbers from my land line here in Michigan U.S.A. That is the Country Code for the UK.

I'm sure someone has already mention this - but this is exactly how I punched in the numbers:

011 44 020 747 85562

I'd do it again when I have the funds to pay for the ridiculous surcharge. But I'm sure I'll still get the same message.

"You are unauthorized to call this number"

The map is interesting. But... it ain't doing me an ounce of good cause I don't know what I am looking at. I see roads, hospitals, palace, river, airport, museums, etc. Yellow arrow I assume points to the "possibility" of the origin.

Oh well, enough said.

NO!

You have to leave out the first zero in the UK AREA CODE.

So you have to dial 011 44 20 7478 5562

In every message before this one, the only number you quoted was "+44" and went onto claim it was an inner London number. As I pointed out a number of times, not it is not, "+44" is just the international code for the whole of the UK.

Oh, OK. So the next time (it's saved on the computer for future use) I dial it - I dial it the way you have it. Assuming the person didn't change their number already - which I bet they have.

Yes, I finally figured that out. Sorry for being kinda slow on this end. I never made international calls before.
