Panasonic TH37PX70 - the right choice?
LagosSteve

Hi,

After doing some research I've ordered a TH37PX70.

Decided against a full 1080p as it will mostly be used for watching non HD channels on sky (but via Sky HD) and was worried about these not looking good compared to my top of the range (at the time) Panasonic 32inch CRT.

Apart from watching the occasional HD programme on Sky the other main source is a HTPC with HD DVD and downloaded HD video (will upgrade to graphics card with HDMI)

I guess my concern is how the HTPC will look on a 1024x720panel.

Should I change my mind and go for a 1080p panel? If so would I be happy with the quality of Sky SD channels?

Thanks

Steve

How far will you sit from it? That's the critical factor.

May not be neccessary.

New TV should have a VGA port so just connect up to that. Assuming it's 720p HD stuff you're downloading, it'll work fine.

Also, to get a PC playing full 1080p stuff takes a serious amount of PC power. Unless you have a pretty high spec PC already, just upgrading the graphics card is unlikely to be enough.

I output 720p from my laptop through VGA and it looks fantastic on the TV.

At that distance with a 37" you won't notice any difference with full HD (obviously different TVs look different just the resolution isn't relevant).

Your Panny plasma should be a very good choice.

The picture on this TV is amongst the very best. TV seems the perfect compromise to handle SD and HD material. I 've had mine since June 2007 and got it for £799 but it should be available for around £650 now.

I'm extremely happy with this purchase.

I'm thinking of getting this TV later this Spring after some work has been done.
Currently have a 26" Samsung LCD- My worry is with a bigger screen are digital artefacts clearly visible on the Plasma?

The closest seat is 5feet away and the furthest 12feet- is the picture on Freeview acceptable 5feet away and at an angle aswell as 12feet?

Heard plenty of good reviews and the demos in Comet are great but HD. SD is my concern

No 'artefects' and great for SD as well.

A really good TV that does everything well. You would notice a huge improvement over your Samsung I would guess.
