Hello and a happy new year to all.

Its skthecat here, well I am now ready to move on SkyHD and proper AV equipment and I have been offered the following kit and have a couple of tech questions, firstly I will list the kit and then the issues

Sky HD Box

Yamaha RX-V361 Home Cinema Receiver
Yamaha NSP 110 5.1 Speaker System
Nintendo Wii
LG 37inch LCD (Only one HDMI but has Component in)

NO DVDR as yet (But will get Player/Recorder for archiving purposes

The Issues

With the LG only having one HDMI input, the RX-V361 says it can handle HD content through its component video and it has three of these ! can I run Sky HD and other HD sources through the Yamaha receiver and then into my LG Using the Yamaha Component Video inputs???
and I would assume I would need to route audio by other means ??
All recommendations Welcome

Thanks

Personally I would connect......

HDMI Sky HD > HDMI TV
Optical Out Sky HD > Optical In Yamaha
Component Wii > Component TV
Audio Outputs (phonos) Wii > Audio Inputs (phonos) Yamaha

Connections for future DVD Recorder providing full RGB compatibility...

AV1 RGB Scart Sky HD > AV2 RGB Scart DVD-R
AV1 RGB Scart DVD-R > AV1 RGB Scart TV
Optical/Audio outputs (phonos) DVD-R > Optical/Audio Inputs (phonos) Yamaha

Are you getting confised between audio and video outputs? I assume you have a toslink output from the sky hd, so run that into the yamaha.

The hdmi from the sky hd obviously goes into the telly, then the wii can use one of the component sockets, as could the dvd/r

No, its just that on the AV receiver brocure it says that component Video is as good as HDMI cable at carrying HD video signal , and as the AV has 3 Component Video ins I thought this would be a better option than the HDMI interface iscuss:

Presumably the only benefit of running all video through the Yamaha receiver as component is that you then get automatic switching of both audio & video by selecting a source; rather than having to do it twice on the TV & receiver?

As to which looks best on your TV (i.e. HDMI or component) that's for you to tell us

Well a lot of people say that there is no noticeable difference between component input and HDMI from Sky HD box to TV, but I've never heard anybody say that a component connection is better than a HDMI conncetion - also you are introducing a secondary piece of kit that you don't necessarily need to (the amp) if all you want to do is watch high definition television and listen to it through the TV speakers. And you are using two component cables to replace a single HDMI cable - and component cables aren't cheap, whilst you get a HDMI cable free with your Sky HD box anyway.

Why not use your amp and its component feeds for your two other HD output sources once you have bought two more HD output sources (the Nintendo and an upscaling DVD recorder)?

Whilst you only have two HD sources, connect Sky HD direct to TV using HDMI, connect Nintendo direct to TV using component. Let the AV receiver do what it is designed to do and produce digital surround sound based on the digital audio inputs that you feed it, but keep the video aspects away from it until you are forced to use it (i.e., when you get three pieces of HD kit with only two HD inputs on the telly). After all, connecting component kit to the amp, then from amp to TV, is certainly not going to produce a better picture than connecting component directly to TV, but may well introduce interference. And will certainly introduce the necessity of buying at least one more component cable than you currently need.

No, I am getting the 5.1 surround speaker package as mentioned in the original post NSP1100 or something.
And yes you are right, I like the easy switching benefit, We currently sit 3-4 metres away from the 37inch LCD and there is no real way of getting any closer so if their is a miniscule loss of quality with component at the moment it wont matter.

Any recommendations on a DVDR to add to the above? and best way to interconnect?
Thanks

Sorry , Scorp, I rushed the last edit before I left work, I meant to ask what Make/Model DVD/PVR Recorder! more than how to connect. For example

A Susy DIB/DOB With 5 x HDMI pass through's, 3 Optical's in/out and or a Boshiba____ Etc, Etc, that is what I really meant. Sorry!

Tried not to use brand names!

you would be better with duraband or around that price from tesco/ asda

or stop wasting money

forget the dvd recorder, wait and get blu ray as it looks as if its going to win

forget the yamaha and get this from £350 to £400

http://www.eu.onkyo.com/products/pro...n_5710611.html

you could put all your hdmi leads, component, rgb into that amp

one hdmi lead to your tv which will upscale wii

buy a cheap dvd player with hdmi or wait for blu ray

stick with the yamaha speakers

Sorry for bring short tempered last night, but as far as the DVD recorder/Player is concerned, I have recorded every single Speedway Meeting transmission on Sky Sports since 1995! and I am building an extensive Speedway Archive for future generations and to take snap-shots from for my website Leicesterspeedway.co.uk/.com I have probably got 400 + speedway meetings on DVD. This is the only reason I need to have a recorder, I rarely watch DVD'S at all. So its purely for archiving reasons.

as long as the dvd recorder has a RGB INPUT this will suffice and a hard drive.

if it has a hard drive you will be able to edit your speedway stuff before burning to disc

Hi, you say the DVDR will need a Hard Disk, doesn't the Sky HD box have a Hard Disk? Will I not be able to copy to DVD Disk from that?

Yes you will, but Sky+ has no editing facility. Recording directly to DVD-RAM will give you some limited post-recording editing (chop off titles, adverts, etc) but a HDD gives you the opportunity to edit prior to fast copy to DVD.

yes you will BUT failed recordings are possible

if you record from sky straight to disc its called ' on the fly '

please get a hard drive

If you do as I suggest and WAIT a wee while longer you will be able to get a blu ray recorder , as this format looks to have won the format war with HD.

this will record a lot more on one disc of your speedway

you will be able to play blu ray discs

If you get the amp I suggest you will be able to connect everything to it and have one hdmi cable to your telly

however its your choice and as everything moves to hdmi anyway try and see the bigger picture
