I still have a Rima grill and use it regularly. I think it makes better toasties than the newer ones.
For a filling I like cheese and hamburger relish.

A toasted sandwich to me is one that you butter on the outside, place in one of these - and enjoy.

I have them in an actual toasted sandwich, usually with cheese and mushroom. Mmmmmmmmm!

I do with cheese, my 12 year old love making them, and he also chops up hot dogs occasionally and puts them in as well
I've obviously had a sheltered life! I'd only considered beans as going on toast, not toast on beans. Doesn't it all squish out?

But it's ever so tasty. In response to your second question, I've never tried pittas but paninis work fine.

I forgot to mention earlier (and hope it's not too late to say) that if you want one for paninis, it's best to look for those that say they're capable of toasting ciabattas, or alternatively to get a panini press/sandwich maker combo.
Should've said that in my original post, but I hadn't considered that not all sandwich makers are the same as mine.
