I am trying to help a friend whose TV has only one scart socket but who has a Freeview Digital box (scart only connection) and a DVD recorder which my friend also wants to connect up to the TV via scart. I have been looking at various scart selectors that allow 2 or more scarts to be connected up to one scart socket. If I buy a manual one how does my friend switch from one device to another and is an automatic scart connector worth the money? I ask this as the person in question is not very mobile. Any advice on this and best products to purchase ( I have looked only at Argos catalogue) would be very much appreciated.

Manual switching requires the viewer to physically switch the connection over by way of a button or switch on the device.

Automatic switchboxes do not require any manual switching, it's all done automatically.

Seeing as your friend has mobility problems, they would benefit by purchasing the automatic version.

The item below is a 4 way with remote control, the extra connection is handy if they want to add any further devices at a later date.

I know I'm stating the obvious but

Can't you connect the freeview box to back of the DVD recorder (AV2). This would mean your friend could record from freeview?

This is exactly what you should be doing.

freeview scart ---> DVDR AV2
DVD AV1 ---> TV scart

And with this method no switching is required, just place the DVDR into standby to watch the Freeview box, turn it on to record from Freeview or record from it.

I made an assumption that the DVDR is non-digital, therefore to record from freeview you need to set the DVDR input 'channel' as AV2 (or whatever its called on this model).
You can leave it set to AV2 because if you ever use it to record analog via a timer event, the recorder will switch to the correct channel for the duration of the recording and then back to AV2 upon completion.

Just to update - did what was recommended above and my friend is 'over the moon' to put it mildly. Many thanks to all who took the bother to post. Your help was very much appreciated.

Good news! If the DVDR in question WAS a digital tuner model, come back again and I'll help with a set up that could help watch one digital channel while recording another......
