I seem to remember that the regular BBC SD output of old was optimized for viewing on 22-24" CRT screens? Does anyone know what the BBC now consider as the optimum screen size for their HD transmissions now or in the future?

I don't think there is such a standard as 1080p/24 productions are geared just as much for a digital cinema as a domestic HD televisions where the ratio between screen size and viewing distance is more important.

I don't think the BBC have ever suggested any such silly idea?, screen size is completely meaningless - it's only the ratio of screen size and viewing distance that matters.

For best results from HD, get a Full Hd 1080 set, as big a screen as you can, and view as close as you can - but SD will be unwatchable like this!.

Plus (and it's entirely my subjective opinion) when you sit close enough to a full HD set to get the benefit it fills to much of your field of vision - it's like sitting at the front of the cinema.

Which is probably the whole point?

If you like sitting at the front of the cinema, like most people that I know I prefer to be towards the back. I wasn't criticising those who do like the picture that big (which is why I emphasised it was my subjective opinion) but just pointing it's no necessarily better for everyone (or even a majority).

Do we really need to hear about your preference for the back row at the cinema

The BACK?! You should try sitting slap bang in the midde! (unless its one of those daft cinemas that puts the aisle in the middle) Otherwise you're missing out of the surround effects
