Tend to do my own these days. I make the batter out of Bitter and flour - makes it really crispy. Also sometimes use sweet potatoes for the chips - makes a nice change.

But if I go to the chippy, I prefer an older traditional one, with a wooden bar to lean against and corona pop in a humming fridge in the corner. And none of your fancy electric tills, a wooden drawer with cash. Is there anywhere that still wraps the F&C in newspaper.

They are not allowed to wrap F&C in newspaper anymore.. It means they don't smell the same as they used to.. Vinegar and hot newspaper..

It has been illegal to use actual newspaper for years, but I think it's still fine if they use specially bought paper.

It took me while to find my 'local' when I moved to Birmingham, but am in love with Bella Pizza down broad street.

And there's a place in Selly Oak called Adams which does exceptional kebabs.

My only disdain is up here they don't do fat chips anywhere!

Does anyone just buy a fresh battered fish...and then bring it home and serve it with something else instead of buying chips?

If so, what?
