I recently purchased an Elonex LNXTY - 37F2. The picture quality is variable, but at least it covered the full screen until last week when I noticed that all off the terrestrial channels and the satelite channels showing newish programmes had started showing them in widescreen, thus giving a 'letter box' effect with black bars at ther top and bottom of the screen. When I expand the picture, I can't see the Sky banners - is there any way to get rid of the bars?

If the programmes are in widescreen, and the digibox is set to output in widescreen, and the TV is set to display in widescreen, then you will only be getting the letter box effect on widescreen Panavision movies that are wider than the screen itself (2.35:1 rather than 1.77:1). It is correct in this instance to have the bars - without the bars the picture would have to be zoomed into and you would be missing the edges of the movie at both sides of the screen (about a quarter of the screen).

If your digibox is set to output in 4:3L or 4:3 rather than 16:9 then you would be getting black bars - but the black bars would be apparent on all transmissions, not just widescreen, and in fact the black bars would be more apparent on 4:3 transmissions but at the right and left of the screen rather than the top and the bottom.

Note - the problem you are experiencing (which isn't a problem on a widescreen TV, only on a 4:3 TV) is only apparent on movies where the movie itself was recorded in a wider aspect ratio than the ratio of your TV. All widescreen TV programmes are recorded in 16:9, the same dimensions as your TV, and you shouldn't be getting black bars on those transmission.

PS You're not friends with Neil J Jones are you - actually scrap that, let's not go there.

It's not absolutely clear but it does sound as if your Sky box has gone to 4:3L when it it should be 16:9. You haven't got Sky+ and been using the copy function have you by any chance?

I have been TRYING to use the copy facility on Sky + but without success, so how do I restore it back to normal? My picture format is 16:9. Incidentally, does anyone know how to copy to video?

If your Sky+ is connected to your VCR via scart, just set the VCR to be input AV2 (or whatever Sky is plugged into) and press play on Sky+ and record on VCR. Much easier than COPY unless you wish to copy multiple Sky+ items to one tape.

This is a bug in the current Sky+ software, it's a while since I had the problem and can't remember exactly how to get out of it but if selecting 16:9 from the Sky Services menu doesn't do it then switching on and off at the wall will - it wasn't difficult to get out of, I just can't remember the exact method.

And with the current bug it's the only way, it's a pain though because copy was useful for doing a bulk overnight transfer.

The bug affects the copy function only. If you playout manually, all should be OK.

My picture was on 16:9, so I changed it to 4:3 and back again and it now covers te whole screen so thanks for your help. However, I have now noticed a flickering picture [it goes bright and then dark for a few seconds]. Is this a fault or are the connections loose? I am a wheelchair user so it's obviously not easy to get in behind to check. My assistants seem to think the connections are tight.
