Riggwelter is a full flavoured strong Yorkshire ale brewed using our unusual Yorkshire Square fermentation system. The result is a well balanced, deep chestnut coloured ale.
Samuel Smiths still uses the 'Yorkshire Square' system [and is actually made in Yorkshire] ; http://www.merchantduvin.com/pages/5...yorkshire.html . Their Pale Ale is wonderful stuff , it won the Gold Medal in the World Beer Championships .

Just to give a big appreciation of Marstons Taverns for always having a decent guest ale on. From Hobgoblin, to Fortyniner, to Old Empire, theres always a lovely pint to be had.
Ive only just got a decent appreciation for the taste of a proper traditional ale. Obviously I dont know what Ive been missing!

Since this thread, I've actually become more of a real ale drinker, still relatively new to it though.

So far my favourites are SOS, Directors, Abbots Ale and Exmoor Beast. Can anyone recommend any more that I might like?

Most bottled beers have been pasteurised and are no longer living. They cannot be called real-ale.

There are a few real-ales available in bottles, look for the words "Bottle Conditioned" on the label, these are rare in supermarkets but you may have more luck in your local real-ale off licence (by local I mean Leicester has just one, its somewhere you travel to unless you are lucky).

Better try the local pub, real ale is pretty much a local thing, you will find different beers in different parts of the country. Its one of the things that makes visiting different parts of the country fun.

You may find a pub that has guest ales from other places, and of course there is Weatherspoons.

The past few drinks I've tried have been in real ale pubs, as well as Wetherspoons. Spoons usually have a good selection.

Bought a couple of bottles of Spitfire from Sainsburys as its down to a £1 a bottle, but I didn't like it, has a harsh, coppery taste.

Fuller's London Pride is still the one beer that I would choose if I could only drink one ale for the rest of my days.

Along with many others on here I am a great fan of Timothy Taylors landlord.
I have not seen mentioned anything from Moorehouses Brewery, They make Pendle Witches bitter and Black Cat Mild both superb beers of their type.
I have recently tried some National Trust Viceroy Pale Ale, it's one of those beers which has to be poured with care as the bottle contains yeast, a bit like the old Worthington White shield.
On the theme of Bottles, Holts brewery (South Manchester) make some belting beers which retain excellent flavour in the Bottle as does jenning Cumberland Bitter.

Red Squirrel English IPA
Vale Royal Union (this was a one off special for the Royal Wedding, so less likely they produce it again)

I like to buy mini barrels from our local real ale brewers. Tastes so much better than bottled beer.

I like malty beers best probably but I also love fruit beers and chocolate beers.

May is CAMRA's Mild Month, so I hope we'll all be partaking in some. I've got a can of Theakson's on the go now, but I will be seeking out some of Sarah Hughes' most excellent Ruby Mild at the next beer festival I'm at.

Go wild for Mild!

Real ale is the best thing ever. Luckily my local has 7 on at anytime, with 4 changing each week.

A few personal favourites:

Hop Garden Gold (HOP)- Hogs Back
Traditional English Ale (TEA) - Hogs Back
Moondance - Triple F
Summer Lightning - Hopback
Hole Hearted - Oakleaf
White Wing- Hammerpot
Golden Hare- Bath ales

Best national ale - Bombardier

You must be around the Surrey Hampshire borders then?

I've toured both the Hogs Back and Triple F breweries.

Certainly am. I live about 10 mins drive away from the Hogs Back Brewery. I've done the tour too and i was ace. Very good fun and value for money too as they certainly arn't shy on dishing out the beer. Glad i wasn't driving .

I think it's ok , just a bit over-rated that's all.

I'm sure you only put that one in to see if anyone would notice it wasn't an ale

We had excellent hospitality on the Triple F visit.
Before and after at their flagship pub, The Railway, outside Alton station.

Fullers London Pride is a great ale when served well.
It is also one of the best ales out of a bottle i.e. it actually tastes like the cask version.
