I was brought up on Greenall Whitley many many years ago - now no more! and my mother was the secretary to Mr Magee of Magee Marshalls of Bolton until 1945 when I was born. Magee's was subsequently taken over by Greenalls.
Here in Cumbria there are a number of pubs that brew their own. My local is The Prince of Wales at Foxfield the home of Foxfield Brewery and also owner of Tigertops of Wakefield. Another range that I like is the from the Banktop Brewery at Bolton where the beers are generally named after the late great Fred Dibnah a local personality whose own tipple was normally Guinness (ugh). In these days of micro breweries the Blue Anchor in Cornwall has always brewed on the premises for possibly hundreds of years! I don't know why but I have never really found a Scottish beer to my liking - but I have spent many wonderful years trying to find one. |

Can recommend the ales produced by the Purple Moose Brewery in Porthmadog North Wales. Anybody coming to the area this summer should try them.http://www.purplemoose.co.uk/pmb_home.htm

Anyone tried any beers from the Dartmoor brewery? I tried some recently (in Dartmoor strangely enough!) and it was really good. The beer I tried was called Jail Ale.

Well last night was a strange one had to have 3 pints of fizzy due lack of bitter.
But apart from a Spitfire, London Gold and a Deuchars IPA. I did have a Brodie's Citra. Very fruity and light. Nice but you couldnt drink it all night. Had a Saracen IPA from the bear and staff which was good. |

just over 24 hours before I head through the doors of the GBBF. No idea as yet of what I am going to try apart from the pies and pork scrathings.

I'm going on Friday. As long as that nice stall that does the big fat samosas is there, I'll be a happy bunny. Because let's face it, it won't be hard to find lovely beer!

Favourites of mine include Fuller's ESB, Wells' Bombardier, Hobgoblin, Bishop's Finger and Courage Best Bitter.
Also have to give a mention to Holt's Maple Moon and Everard's Tiger Best Bitter. |
