Spreading the word!!

I know people have had problems with Tiscali TV but in the 3 months I have had it, I am very, very happy.

No problems at all (touch wood) and the channel line up and on demand is fantastic.

My only worry is that Tiscali are going at it a bit half hearted which leads me to think the plug could be pulled.

Why no advertising? I have not seen one advert on tv, magazine, billboard etc for Tiscali TV.
You can't move for Sky and Virgin adverts so if Tiscali are serious about having a TV service, why aren't the spreading the word?

I know there is very limited coverage at the moment but surely a bit of public awareness wouldn't do any harm.

Please don't pull the plug tiscali, I have finally found a tv service I am 100% happy with. (choice, quality, value for money)

I agree that its a great service and good value for money as well.
From my understanding Tiscali have to install equipment at your local exchange, so that takes quite a bit of investment. Plus they have the task of upgrading all the old Home choice customers to TTV again no cheap feet.

I have started seeing adverts for TTV, well actually adverts saying that xyz channel is available on Sky, Virgin, Tiscali TV sort of adverts.

My guess is they are doing things right, in that they are getting the infrastructure in and gradually building up their support systems, plus training installation engineers etc. So their first new TTV customers are existing broadband customers whose local exchanges are upgraded plus converting homechoice.

So once they start advertising to the masses they will have a fairly robust system and have an easy time of things. If they rush it too much they will hit problems that will give them a bad name.

I just hope BT's existing infrastructure can cope with all the new IPTV thats coming.

But Tiscali TV is great, my only real niggles are that the optical out on a standard (Non TTV+) box doesnt work, and the menus, channel changing is slow. These are only very minor niggles and dont detract from the great service.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK TISCALI.

Ched,
What box have you got?

I've got the Telsey none PVR box and the optical out works fine

Got Tiscali TV last week. So far so good! Great to have these channels again.

The broadcast channels shouldn't strain the BT network that much. It'll be the on-demand stuff where everyone watches different things at the same time that'll prove demanding.

Right up until this week I've been very happy with Homechoice and have recommended them to loads of people. I'm now a bit worried about Tiscali though.

In December they released there last set of results and targets for the next 12 months.

They had 36,000 customers back then (12th Dec) and were aiming for 50,000 'registrations' by the end of the year (ie - registered but not neccessarily working although they claim there's only a 2 week waiting list to get active).

By the end of 2008 they want 200,000 customers and they should be launching a new marketing campaign any day now.

It is the Tesley one (all Black no buttons just a big green square). I have hooked an optical cable up to my amp but it doesnt seem to work. I use the analogue cables and they are fine. I cant find any settings to switch the optical on, must admit I havent looked in last month or so. Maybe I should check menu.

Did you have to switch it on or enable it?????

I am very interested in knowing if the optical works as I know that people have it working on the PVR machines but it didnt work on my non PVR box.

There are a number of features on the new Tiscali box that are being worked on...some of them (HDMI, digital audio) work "out of the box" with certain types of home equipment, but it is actually really complicated to implement these across the board as not all manufacturers of home equipment implement "standards" in the same way . My understanding is that in the next few months, all of these capabilities will be enabled.

The current Tiscali boxes are incredibly capable boxes, but they are based on new technology (Sigma MPEG-4 chipsets, HD capable, Ethernet fed, etc...) that is still evolving. I'm sure they are pushing sigma and telsey as hard as they can to sort out compatability issues as quickly as possible.

amdg2000: I did realise that the box is under field development and thats why I knew that the PVR version had optical working. But as far as I was aware the standard Tesley box was not issuing a PCM or bitstream signal. I do get the standard red light out of the cable so the components are in the box.

So when Glenyb suggested that he had a standard Tesley box with Optical working I was/am very interested.

Fingers crossed someone will say how they got it working and then I can see if I have a compatibility problem or I just need to 'switch optical sound on'. Cheers

I have to say I didn't know TTV has been rolled out either in my region of NW England. This is an amazing price at £19.99. I currently pay Sky £21 for basic channels, BT £27 for Broadband and BT £11 for Option 1. That is £59 a month!

They seem to be ramping up marketing, as I only found out about it via a letter that came yesterday, and I was amazed to see Sky One in their TV lineup.

It's a shame I've just got BT Vision 2 months ago and hence had to renew my BT Contract for 12 months!

But I'd consider this for my Mum, as she pays BT £12 for her line rental alone and would probably pay another £8 to get the Sky Channels and stuff, plus her grand children can use the Wireless broadband when they visit at the weekend.

For people like me who were not in a Cable street, this is the first time to get these extra TV Channels without having to rely solely on Sky.

I agree with the title of the thread, why the secracy up until now! If I'd know back in November, I probably would have not signed up with BT for another year!
