Here is the first ever image of the earth taken from the moon. See http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap081118.html

Thanks for that...I've just spent the last 10 mins totally absorbed on that site.

No pics of the ice glaciers on Mars yet...?

I always find this quite inspiring.

Venus and Jupiter are looking magnificent as they move closer together in the night sky.

Yes they have been moving closer rather quickly but I cannot see them tonight.

Do that make a tight trio with the moon on Monday?

Oh checked it now. See http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/ataglance

Go to iTunes.
Astronomycast is brilliant.
The Jodcast.
Slacker Astronomy.
Star Stuff.
Plus loads from NASA and Discovery.

It's interesting that you raise this point, lozza73. Certainly some of the high mountains in the southern hemisphere surrounding the impact basins of Hellas and Agyre look like they have been subject to glacial actions like the mountains of the Lake District or mountains and fjords of Norway although they are currently bare of glaciers.

New Scientist has also done a piece on the supersonic water jets shooting off into space here at http://www.newscientist.com/article/...turn-moon.html.

The interesting thing is the mechanism that produces such a spectacular display. I suspect that gravitational tidal forces are responsible for these effects similar to the situations of Io and Europa in the Jovian system.

The question is now whether Enceladus also has a liquid ocean under that icy crust and it appears that the answer might be a "Yes".

According to Dr Chris Smith of the Naked Scientists the geyser has a diameter of 1km!

Ohh. Now that you mention this, would this be them here. They have been in the sky at the nights for the past while in the almost exact same part of south west part area of sky. Though one of them has been there longer than the other. Its been bugging me for the past while wondering what they were

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/5...gsinskywu9.jpg apologies for my shaky hand, the things are towards the centre/right of the picture . I took it on Thursday at about 5pm.

There are some features out there about the Martian glaciers and some of them include pictures to go with the text and some articles can be seen here http://www.space.com/scienceastronom...-glaciers.html, here http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sciencean...d-on-Mars.html
and here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7151190.stm.

These vast glaciers hidden glaciers mean that there is a significant reservoir of water ice on Mars. Now that knowledge might be useful, not only to study the evolution of the land forms on Mars but also for any future human explorers or perhaps even colonists.

Yep, that's Jupiter above Venus.

Watch Jupiter and Venus over the next few nights and Venus will overtake Jupiter. And the moon will hide Venus on Monday.

Yes but I think that the moon hides Venus while it is still light.

They've transferred to Edwards, Henry, because of poor conditions at the Cape. Landing now at 21.25

Ooh, thanks to this thread I've just realized what I'm looking at right now to the south-west. A rare clear night in Blackpool!

They're so bright, I thought they were the ISS and something else, but now I realize I'm probably looking at Venus and Jupiter?
