Just been outside to have a look at the sky...very thick clouds and I cannot see it clearing by midnight. Have seen them many times before, but look to watch them again..

Living in the countryside means a dark sky which is better for viewing.

That is regrettably the problem in the UK. All too often we miss out on celestial events because of the cloud and rain.

One day, I wouldn't mind going to somewhere like the Nevada or Australian deserts to see a really good Perseid or Leonid meteor shower.

Has anyone ever been to such places and witnessed truly dark (and clear) skies?
No unfortunately, but I was in the middle of nowhere in Wales (with no light pollution) when Haleys comet was here, it was amazing! Completely different to what I was able to see from Liverpool.

It is best between midnight and dawn.

Take a look at this website about the Earth compared to other planets and suns.

I thought the sun was big.

Did I not read it right that the ones this year are going to be hard to see unless you live in the North of Scotland?

'tis fine way ooop North, if cloudy. Just been out in a short-sleeved T-shirt and it was warm, and not one sound to be heard. Total silence.

Been outside since 10pm, looking directly overhead I've only seen one. Very bright.
I think I can see Jupiter, is it quite low down in the sky?
Looks like the clouds will clear in an hour or two.
They should also be visible post midnight too so hopefully it will have cleared up for you by then.

Ayone still struggling with directions (tvqueen?)...

Now the Moon's up, due East is a tad to the right of it.
That very bright 'star' - can't miss it, brightest thing in the sky, after the Moon - is Jupiter - that's roughly South-East at the moment.
I saw jupiter as well i think

saw the plough and the w and 5 so far can't believe it

Saw an amazing one about half an hour ago. It was bright, literally glowing white with a long trail being it. It looked like something out of Armageddon, or was it Deep Impact? One of the asteroid disaster films anyway.
