It still did rather well. How long was it scheduled to operate at the start? 90 days?
) The instruments are still working etc and will perform some unique experiments not possible while it was mobile.

Breaking News: No immediate return to the Moon...
Sky News has today reported that President Obama has shelved plans for US astronauts to go back to the Moon in the near future. This is because of the revised spending plans contained within the 2011 US budget.
More on the story here: http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Wor...15538877?f=rss |

Sad the moon explorations been put on hold, too costly in world financial state probably.
I had just posted this HBO series link in another DS post about Tom Hanks. If you want a good space drama based on facts you wont be dissapointed. From the Earth to the Moon (Tom Hanks HBO Signature Edition) [DVD http://www.amazon.co.uk/Earth-Moon-T.../dp/B000CQ97OC Its a well acted and big budget production, 5 disc set, I bought it a few years ago but price now is great value if you like space subjects its worth it.

The day of the Red Worlds...
...but it's nothing sinister.
Tonight, the Moon and Mars should still be reasonably close in the sky. Indeed, Mars will only be about 62 million miles away from Earth - more on this story here - http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20100128...w-4b158bc.html. The disk should be visible with a telescope and binoculars should really bring out that salmony-pink colour of Mars. The other story is that NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has viewed Pluto only to find that this dwarf world (Pluto having been downgraded from planet status in 2006) has taken on a red tinge hence the pictures in tiger2000's post - more on this story here http://uk.news.yahoo.com/18/20100204...n-e123fef.html. Something similar has occurred on Neptune's moon Triton where's there's pink snow at the poles. Perhaps it's organic matter that's the cause of this red hue on both of these little ice worlds. |

SDO launches !!! SDO will transmit as much as 50 times more science data than any mission in NASA history,” says Dean Pesnell of the Goddard Space Flight Center. Images with 10 times greater resolution than high-definition television recorded every 0.75 seconds will reveal every nuance of solar activity |

Anyone got any idea when the ISS will officially be declared complete? The latest shuttle mission has installed the last major components as I understand it so I was expecting a bit more of a fanfare at this milestone. I know there are later missions yet to bring up equipment for the inside but if the structure is all there now, shouldn't NASA, ESA etc.. be making a bit of noise about it?

A new era of funding for NASA. See http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...ED0F1C5UOQ.DTL
A better way to go where no one has gone before? What do you think? |

There used to be an ISS site. There almost certainly still is. A good place to start is: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/st...ain/index.html |

UK Space Agency
My workmate says he has inside knowledge that we'll soon have our own UK Space Agency. I've actually read the articles about this possibility on the net, but he seems to indicate that he has this extra secret information, which he's not divulging and he's really winding me up now as he knows I love stuff about space and the universe etc. and would dearly love it, if the UK was to get its own space agency....in competition with NASA of course
![]() Does anyone else have anymore info, his smug face is really doing my head in! |

The last 2 episodes of the AstronomyCast podcast have been about mysteries of our solar system. They are fascinating and I recommend them highly.

I saw Venus last night for the first time in the current apparition. Get ready for a string of UFO sightings over the spring as it rises in he sky.
Not a great apparation. See http://www.curtrenz.com/1024o.html |

Anyone catch 'Wonders of the Solar System' on BBC2/HD last night? Visually very nice but a bit thin on actual content I thought. The footage from the solar eclipse in India was very good. I really would love to see a total eclipse for myself. Anyone had that pleasure?

Unfortunately anything too serious or heavy has been relegated to BBC4
