No but give me a link and it will be on my reading list. As you know Dave Scott fell foul of the "no stamp collecting on moon rule".....or was that no private enterprise on the moon?
Here you go.

We also learned how to remember the nine planets in order from the sun, Mercury,Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Pluto (ok. I know, technically Pluto is not considered to be a planet anymore).
It goes like this, Many Volcanoes Erupt Mulberry Jam Sandwiches Under Normal Pressure.
We're going to have to come up with a new mnemonic now that Pluto is no longer accepted as a planet.

I use an space picture as my wallpaper.

Don't be silly! There won't be an earthquake, the universe will just implode.

I've just started reading this book

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Afterglow-Cr...4384279&sr=1-1

about the discovery of cosmic background radiation and the COBE satellite programme. It's a great read so far.

Can you imagine a program like "Tomorrows World" suceeding as peaktime TV these days?
I think only Brainiac on Sky with Hammond has been considered a real success in recent years. I read some media pundit said it was the science show that all stations wanted. So science and technology done Top Gear style is the way forward!
Betta get in quick, lads and lasses!

Especially considering massive cuts to ESTABLISHED UK science (esp. astronomy) budgets. Sadly UK involvement in so many current and future international collaborations seems doubtful. Not to mention redundancies at home. But hardly unque on the part of THIS government. The UK (unlike most EU countries) never seems to value or promote research and enterprise in these areas...
I think there's a lot more interest in government now especially as new players like China, India and Brazil are starting to get heavily involved. Problem is we listen to the accountants too much who point out how expensive it all is, especially when we still need to spend a lot more on Health and Transport.

But as we know science and maths are not considered prized subjects anymore. But any nation without a decent space programme could look second rate in the near future. We can't just rely on Virgin Galactic!

Right thanks for that. When I've got through Singh's Big Bang, I'll take a look at this.

Isn't Brainiac just a poor imitation of Mythbusters though? I have no idea why that show hasn't been picked up by one of the terrestial channels. I know BBC2 did have some episodes but they butchered them by cutting them into half hour shows (!!!) and doing an entirely different voice-over.

It is leagues above Brainiac although, to be fair, I think they are running out of original things to 'bust' by now.

Is it true that there's something like a string near the sun and if that snapped then the world would end because nothing would be able to stay still

I think what made it a prized possession was having Richard Hammond on it with his cheeky humour.

Link to UK Civil Space Strategy 2008 - 2012 for those who don't know and might be interested. There's a downloadable pdf.

Possibly the string you mean is gravity. If it snapped the earth would sail off into the outer reaches of space.

Very nice picture.

This is a picture I quite like although it is faked to some extent. See Martian Analemma.
