This image from Mars is one of my all time favourites. You can almost imagine being there. Simply beautiful.

Yep gives you an idea of what it would be like to walk around on the surface there.

What a dream eh. Hopefully something we'll see in our lifetimes!

Initially it was supposed to be 1985 but that proved optimistic. I cannot see man go to Mars any time soon unless a race develops.

I bet you've read Voyage by Stephen Baxter! His fictional account of what might have happened if the US had gone to Mars in 1986? rather than dropped the Apollo programme for the Space Shuttle.

Nope I have not. I would like a link if you got one.

I've read a lot of Baxter stuff but don't remember that one. I shall go have a look at Amazon.

Moon hoax believers your time is nearly up. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will show conclusively that man went to the moon.

See Sky at Night 2nd March 2008

I don't think it will stop the doubters will it. Does it have good enough resolution to show footprints?

Incidentally the program is repeated tonight on BBC4 @ 8.

Yes, very interesting. Presumably it's some sort of gravitational effect? We're still no closer to understanding exactly what gravity is, so these findings could eventually lead to some new explanation if they can find out what's causing the anomalies (assuming it's not just a mistake in their calculations and measurements.)

The implications could be significant - Newton's laws were adequate until scientists noticed anomalies like the orbit of Mercury, which was only explained when Einstein came up with the idea of relativity.

Yep, I read a great review of Voyage and bought it straight away. Excellent novel! He followed it up with Titan which was another hard science novel about a trip to the moon but that wasn't as good.

Looks like only Amazon marketplace sellers have it but at least it will be cheap.

We can all relax now. Robbie Williams and David Icke are going to help prove the existance of intelligent life on mars.

Oh dear. They never learn do they? Look what happened the last time science and idiocy clashed

It won't stop the doubters. It won't stop them, even if they were all put in a rocket and sent to the moon themselves.

Yes, there's no convincing some people, is there? We've been accurately measuring the distance from the earth to the moon for some time now using lasers bouncing off reflectors on the moon's surface. The reflectors didn't get there by themselves...

Wouldn't it be great to have a Lunar Rover that landed at one of the Apollo sites. We could marvel at remains of the LEM, see the debris left by the guys there etc. Mind you part of me thinks those places are so historic they should be left untouched.

A NASA spacecraft in orbit around Mars has taken the first ever image of active avalanches near the Red Planet's north pole. The image shows tan clouds billowing away from the foot of a towering slope, where ice and dust have just cascaded down.

The High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took the photograph Feb. 19. It is one of approximately 2,400 HiRISE images being released today.

I liked that photo of the Earth and Moon from Mars. Now we know what the Martian's saw just before our bacteria kicked their butts in the 1890s

Nice pic, but that can't have been taken from Mars.

I'm pretty sure it was. What makes you think otherwise?
