If I can veer slightly off topic.

Did anyone here the interview with an Scottish MP on Radio Four last week discussing the change in clocks from GMT to BST.

It was suggested that as the Scots are more northerly perhaps they should stay on the system used at present and England / Wales could go to double summertime.

The downside of this was discussed that it may prove awkward to have Scotland on a different time (the US manages it though) and it transpired that the Scottish parliament at Holyrood can have no say about the clock change as this can only be changed by act of parliament at Westminster.

The MSP also ruefully said that Scotland can have no say in space exploration as this is also differed to Westminster.

He pointed out, therefore, that while the Scots have devolved many things, they have no control over Time and Space.

Brilliant quote.

Some of us set an alarm. A night-time launch, it's gonna be spectacular.

Sounded like there was a warning at launch from the left RCS

According to Space.com

About five minutes into launch, the suttle's flash evaporator system experienced a glitch, but this should not interfere with a successful launch.

Oh, you're talking about it here.

Left RCS failure was electronics related, will be checked out on-orbit.

Flash evap glitch at about 4 minutes in, orbiter switched over to second string and ascent was nominal after that.

Starting to see some ascent imagery being analysed, and it doesn't look as though there's any off-nominal debris.

Of course, there's nothing in between Northern Scotland and Southern England/Wales is there? Some parts of northern England are more northerly than southern Scotland lol.

We'll know more in the next few days. The RCS failure was due to a card in an electronics box that malfunctioned, so the telemetry looked weird. They won't be using the affected thrusters for the remainder of the mission.

The flash evaporator is essentially a radiator, and they are using the backup system because the primary failed. It's been seen before on other flights but I'm not exactly sure of the cause, I haven't read up on it yet.

RCS is the Reaction Control System. In Star Trek parlance, the thrusters. Like the little ones on the shuttle's nose.

Flash evap is a heat dissipation system, it has multiple loops cooling the craft.

Has anyone been watching Race to Mars on Discovery Science? It's ok but not half as good as Space Odyssey.

Not been watching it. Hopefully they'll repeat it again.

I nearly missed it due to the US switching to daylight time three weeks earlier. Thought it was 7.28

There is a video of the launch on youtube here
