Can anybody suggest the best connection from my Denon 1940 to my Pana Th42px70? If I use an HDMI link my screen shows that it's receiving 1080i input. However if I use the (supposedly superior) tri-cable component facility the screen only receives 576. This is in spite of me setting the Denon output to 1080.
Q1. Am I doing something wrong?
Q2. Is the picture quality likely to be degraded with the component link and the resultant 576 input?

Any suggestions gratefully received
Tks

Interesting variation in thoughts. It's the fact that the screen shows 1080 when I use HDMI and only 576 when I use Component that has me guessing. The DVD player manual suggests that Component is superior, though others suggest otherwise. They don't make it easy do they?!

Sounds like the Denon only outputs SD over Component? - as suggested, there's no noticable difference between HDMI and Component - but HDMI is theoretically better.

How do you find the difference in the picture?, it doesn't sound like you can tell the difference? - at 576 your TV is doing the upscaling, and at 1080 your DVD is doing the upscaling. With a decent TV it should be pretty well the same.

Thanks for the input Nigel, something else for me to think about. However, I can't find anything in the documentation that tells me the TV is doing any upscaling. I have a sense that the picture is better through HDMI, but I'm not totally sure. Probably a psychological thing which tells me that when I see 1080 source on the screen it's got to be better than 576! I shall play (suck it and see). From your earlier input though you seem convinced that there's a dire danger of buying technology for its own sake. I'm afraid I might have fallen into the trap (£80) for a set of component leads!
Cheers.

This might be of general interest, found on hdtvtest.co.uk
"he fact of the matter is that you will be paying top dollar to get the best looking SD material, considering the advanced processing that is available out there. However, the good thing is that you can actively remedy the situation by attacking specific 'weaknesses' of the Panasonic TH42PX70 by outsourcing the scaling and deinterlacing processes to external units. There are many DVD players and freeview set-top boxes out there with higher quality scaling chips that you can consider. Some DVD players may have superior film mode deinterlacing capabilities and it won't be long before we get a 1080p upscaling DVD player. But in the end, true SD nirvana may only be experienced by users with dedicated external video processors."

So to get back to my original point. - It would appear that, with this particular TV (Pana TH42PX70), I should connect via HDMI and let the Denon DVD 1940 do the upscaling.

Oh what fun this is!!

Why would it?, it's not something you would think to mention in the specs - it's only the recent advertising blurb which has pushed 'upscaling' as something new and wonderful.

which would explain (possibly) why i think my Sky HD box upscales SD via HDMI extemely well (ie better than the upscaler in my Panny TH42PX70 which seems to be mentioned as a weakness).

Switch your HD box between 1080i (HD box scaling) and Auto (TV scaling), and see which looks best - this is the easiest way to compare the scalers.
