Recipes involving chick peas or lentils

Anyone know any tasty ones?

I've just cleared out a cupboard in my kitchen and found a couple of tins of chick peas and green lentils. God knows what possessed me to buy them in the first place as I really have no idea what to do with them.

Anyone got any suggestions, the easier the better

No me neither

I just know the kids will moan if I put them in a stew or anything though. I'm hoping someone will have a recipe that disguises them a bit

well if they were red lentils I could help lol. but I am not sure it would work with green, cos red ones go nice and mushy which the green dont

i'll be making what my kids call 'slushy curry' this week , i will put the recipe in my other thread ( fesh food on a budget) you could always try them in that .

its really chicken and sweet potato curry, but its a 'dry' curry as opposed to a liqued one , hence the kids nickname for it.

Bacon and lentil Salad

Ingredients6 slices thick-cut bacon, coarsely chopped
1 small onion, diced
6 cups water
1 3/4-pound smoked ham hock
1 pound French green lentils, rinsed, drained
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
4 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
1/2 cup walnut oil or olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/2 cup chopped red onion
1/2 cup chopped celery

Preparation

Cook bacon in heavy large saucepan over medium heat until brown and crisp. Using slotted spoon, transfer bacon to paper towels to drain. Add onion to drippings in saucepan; sauté until very tender, about 15 minutes. Add 6 cups water, ham hock, lentils, 1/4 cup parsley, and 2 teaspoons thyme. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer until lentils are tender, about 30 minutes. Using tongs, transfer ham hock to work surface. Drain lentils. Cool ham hock and lentils. Cut ham from bone; dice. Transfer ham to large bowl.
Whisk walnut oil, red wine vinegar, and Dijon mustard in small bowl to blend. Transfer lentils to large bowl with ham. Add dressing, red onion, celery, bacon, remaining 1/4 cup parsley, and remaining 2 teaspoons thyme. Toss to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve at room temperature.

You can make dahl with the lentils, or a lentil bolognese. There's a simple recipe I use for chick peas. Fry onions or leeks and mushrooms, make some mushroom sauce (or tin of soup, if in a hurry), add to mushrooms and onions, with the chick peas and some cheddar cheese and serve with roasted potatoes. It tastes better that it sounds!

Also you can make a chick pea curry.

Edit: oh, green lentils! Sorry. I don't like them.

I sometimes make wraps with

Chickpeas
Tuna
Lemon Juice
Black Pepper
Fresh Coriander
A little mayonaise to bind it all.

Quite healthy if you go easy on the mayo.

Or Chickpea curry, pretty much any tomato based curry will work well with them.

falafel for the chick peas.

Sausage and lentil stew, or bacon and lentil soup for the lentils?

Add the chickpeas to a chilli - they will be disguised in there. You could add the lentils to chilli too, but it might be a good idea to not add them at the same as the chickpeas though (might be too much for your children!)

I love lentils, if you have tinned lentils they are nice heated up and then used as a bed for a fillet of salmon.

Just remembered I did a Chicken & Chickpea tagine which was fantastic.

I kind of used this recipe : http://www.recipezaar.com/137530

as a start and altered it quite a lot. Lovely with the saffron, honey and chilli though.

I've only done it with red lentils, I'm afraid. I don't think it'll work with green ones. But, yes, it's more or less the same as ordinary bolognese with red lentils. I put tomatoes, mushrooms, onions in it and serve with spaghetti and parmesan.

just to let you know i made it with the green ones - i let it boil in water for a long time before adding the other ingrediants as green lentils can be very hard, and it turned out lovely!

Ah, thanks! I'll have to try it! I used to make dishes with mung beans and they were pretty good. I've kind of forgotten about them for some reason!

Some great ideas, thanks everyone

I actually have 3 tins of each to use up, so I may well end up making them all! (or should that be trying to make them )
