Hi all!
i am in no way an expert in any of this and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Could somebody please help me as i feel that i am now out of my depth!!!
I want to set up a home cinema system--i have not bought any items yet however trying to buy them has left me feeling like i am drowning in all the options.

Here is what i want to include/connect:
about a 40inch lcd tv
PS3
Virgin V+ box
Surround sound 5:1
media player

i keep seeing lots of home cinema deals etc but am unsure of what meets my needs.

Questions
will i need a HDMI switcher or can an av amp take care of this?
will i need an extra dvd player or will the PS3 be enough?

could somebody please take me under their wing recommend what i should buy!!

Most good quality LCD TVs now have two or three HDMI sockets on them, so you can wire your kit directly to the TV, and then take the audio separately to the amplifier - OR, depending on the amplifier you buy, there are some amps that will deal with the HDMI switching.

Your PS3 will play DVDs, but you might find that the quality would be better from a dedicated player - not to mention the workload that having a separate player wold take off your PS3.

Hope that helps

Many thanks FC for your reply.

I have just had building work completed and have buried a high quality HDMI lead into the wall--ideally i would like all the sources to run into the amp and then through this lead to the TV if it is possible???

From my research here is what i intend to buy:

samsung LE 40R87BDX LCD
onkyo upscaling amp Not sure which is best for my needs) or sony STR-DG910 amp
samsung XQ100 home theatre system

can anyone see any flaws or limitations with the above?

These sound ideal to me. I would advise that you listen to both amplifiers with the speakers and see which one you prefer before parting with any cash. Also, try and leave some money in the budget for speaker cables etc - you don't need to go mad, just get half decent stuff.
