Get an xbox360. You can stream music from your PCs harddrive, or plug in an mp3 player and play it off there. All using the xbox interface.

You can now also stream divx files from your pc using the xbox, which is very nice indeed.

The music visualiser is a nice extra too.

Oh actually if you want speakers and an amp, obviously the 360 doesnt come with that, but I would just go to Richer sounds, get an amp and two speakers. Or buy one of the surround sound systems.

Whatever you do, the 360 is the easiest way to stream stuff to your system IMHO.

Well this is the easiest method I know of, but it may not be the cheapest. The 360 is a brilliant media streamer though, thats for sure.

I have mine underneath my TV, and when streaming music or video from my PC it is really quiet. It can be loud when playing a game, but I usually have the volume turned up so I cant hear it.

Plus the newer 360's are quieter I think...

I bought my premium on Boxing Day and it has an HDMI port so I'm guessing it's one of the newer models. Still makes quite a racket.

I already have all my AV equipment set up so I don't use it for anything other than games (although I've tried it out and it works OK but nowhere near as well as my laptop/DVD/amp combo) but I'm not sure I'd want to use it for media playback as I don't always have it blaring.

The heat the thing generates would be another factor for me. Can't be healthy for prolonged long-term use.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good games machine but it wouldn't be my first choice as a media centre, there are far better options out there.

Don't take this the wrong way, but how old are you christocar? When I was in the 16-21 age range, I'd probably have agreed with you (if such a console was available when I was 16-21 .... lol). But, now I'm in my late 30's and married, I know I (and more to the point, my wife) wouldn't want a 360 as a media centre in the living room.

*** EDIT ****

Just checked .... you're 30-odd according to your profile.

Single?

ive had a little search for some media centres that might do but im not that clued up on them.

Surprised no-one has suggested getting a modded (or soft modded) Xbox with XBMC yet!

We picked up 4 when Argos were selling them cheap, I soft modded them all and they are now fully functional networked media centres, with the added bonus that they can play games as well. They are quieter and cheaper than the 360 too!

Excuse me? Whats with the personal digs? I am 30, and someone with sound knowledge, have a sound studio in my house and I am a DJ as well. The poster is looking for a simple way to select his media, this is what I am suggesting.

And my 360 is not a launch version, and it sits underneath my tv, and does not make a racket when playing media. When playing games, it does make a lot of noise though.

And no I am not single, nor am I my wifes bitch though, as you appear to be from your comment.

Now lets not get personal though eh?

Bit late for that mate don't you think?

As I said in the first place, don't take it the wrong way! It wasn't intended as a personal dig.

The 360 tends to be a media solution for mainly young single males. Certainly there are other people that'll use it but commonly it's that sex/age group.

If you're happy with it, fine.

If you read it properly, you'd notice I said I wouldn't use it as a media player .... it just so happens that would also be my wifes viewpoint.

Maybe you simply ignore everything your wife says to you .... I dunno. I tend to give my wifes opinions some consideration. Doesn't make me anyones 'bitch' as you so eloquently put it Mr Superstar DJ .....
