Extended Warranty
Some views please.
I recently bought a Panasonic Combi DVD/VHS Recorder DMR-EZ47VEB through Amazon and at the time took out an etended 2 year warranty for £24.99 through Allianz. I thought this gave me 2 extra years but in fact only extended the standard 1 year guarantee to 2. However, although I received a warranty document from Allianz, Amazon informed me that it had not actually been "delivered" in their time scale and I should query with Allianz. This I did but no response, so Amazon invoked their "non-delivery" claims procedure, which gave Alliannz until yesterday to deliver. Today Amazon have informed me that Allianz have failed to meet their obligations and are refunding the charge. The reason I bought this kit AND took out the warranty was to replace a Sony HDD DVD recorder which had failed after 16 months with no extended warranty and would have cost more to replace than repair. Question is, in view of any views on Panasonic reliability generally and this type of kit specifically, do I leave as is ie. rely on 1 year Panasonic warranty, take out an extended warranty (to ADD 1 or 2 years) direct with Panasonic or take out an "insurance-type" warranty with an independent company. I have an on-line quote of £34.52 for a full parts and labour 1 year + 2 extra years warranty from Hayfielding Warranty Care, which seems great value. What do you think? |

vhs machines break down all the time as they always have
its time to archive all the stuff on vhs to dvd and if it blows up you can buy a cheap dvd player please note some films you have recorded you could probally buy for £ 3 on dvd, with a better quality so forget the warranty and start burning to dvd |

Never bought a film on VHS, or DVD for that matter. I replaced the HDD/DVD machine with a VHS/DVD combi to transfer our hundreds of hours of holiday video from VHS to DVD - a long project. Then I could do away with VHS. Then I've got the even more hours on mini-DV to transfer. Probably by the time I've finished, DVD will be obsolete (it's already obsolescent!) and I'll have to transfer that! I think it will take more than 1 year so in view of your comments about reliability of VHS and relative cheapness of the extended warranty I think I'll go for the 2 year extra.
