Planting Random Stuff

Does anyone else plant random stuff from their kitchen?

I currently have 2 avacado stones sprouting
a piece of ginger root growing, a pot full of chillies grown from seed ( i buy chillies and dry them, then remove the seeds), and this morning planted a piece of garlic that has sprouted.
last year I found an odd plant growing in my herb garden and on rooting it up to see what it was found the sweet potato I had stuffed under the soil to see what would happen after it grew shoots in my vegetable rack.
I just cant resist sticking stuff in pots when it sprouts to see what will happen.

I'm thinking of growing a Loofah, more for the experiment and use in the bathroom, however they are fruits and can be used in cooking, so who knows where it will lead?

I didn't really realise until I was watching QI late last night and they asked where Loofahs came from, the answer "The sea" was given and was incorrect. They then showed a Loofah (or "Luffa" to give it the latin name) growing on a vine.

Apparently of African possibly Indian origin and often used in things such as a curry.

Obviously, the ones we use in the bath are dried out. I'm not entirely sure what a "wet" one would look like, however they look like big cucumbers while still on the vine.

If you can get some achocha seeds I recommend growing them come summer, they need to be grown on a warm sunny wall, produce loads of fruit through to first frost, you can stir fry, curry them make chutneys from them, they are fantastic.

this year i've got myself some african horned cucumber seeds just to have an experiment with. But like you I'll plant anything just to see what happens, got a pepper plant growing on my windowsill at the mo, I grow herbs, chillis, and anything I can bung in pots in the garden. The best thing over the last few months has been Rocket. I threw some seeds in a pot in September, we're still eating outside grown rocket now. It's fab.

i am considering doing this when the weather gets better, any time i have fruit or veg from then on, planting a bit and seeing what grows.i do not think tHat olives or oranges will grow in this climate but i am looking forward to the experiment.
there is no point starting now as the cold weather will kill anything before it begins, but i have planters and compost ready.
if anyone has planted anything elses - i didnt even think about chillies - id be interested to hear what the results were,

Something else I have on the go is a chestnut tree, I picked up a conker that had sprouted and bunged that in a pot too. its doing quite wee so far.

I did rocket in a large pot last summer it was great to pick the young leaves for salads.

I reccomend giving pumpkin or squash seeds a go! They can be pretty big plants though as they tend to spread out, so (and this is a Jamie Oliver tip) use a growbag so that they can still spread out but you don't have to use up lots of planter space.

I tried melon as well last year but it just wasn't warn enough over the summer to keep it alive ( Chillies are great and the drier and hotter the weather the better they grow, fingers crossed for a better summer this year!
