No, there's no hack from it's own remote, it requires a special service remote to do it - the One For All hack simulates this.

how good are the "hacks" available on Ebay ?

If you mean the special remotes?, from what I can gather they simply transmit the required stream of data - but I've never seen one.

I built my own for the NS series DVD players ages ago (before you could buy them), but I've never tried it on an 870.

If you can program PIC's I could give you the code.

Nigel, i don't understand any of the technology involved.:I'm an ex-computer engineer but very out-dated.My computers were about "room size". Ebay also offers dvds that might apply to the Sony RDR-HXD870 .It seems a bit pricy to buy an Argos remote.

Agedviewer - I've already programmed up a One-For-All remote to do this and you're welcome to borrow it if you'll pay the postage out and back. It's only sitting round doing nothing so it may as well be useful.

All you need to do in advance is make sure that your existing combination of remote and machine are set to Command Mode = DVD 1. Don't forget to change your remote to this too! See page 149 of instructions.

If you're interested, send me a PM and we'll swap addresses.

Thanks a lot Chris. i'm currently awaiting delivery of the recorder so there's no immediuate rush.I'll decide what to do when it arrives. Thanks again,
Barry
PS i,m a little bit worried about corrupting the firmware or whatever

There doesn't seem to be any firmware degradation and I'm also assured that further firmware updates don't reset the multi-region status.

The major implication is that it may invalidate Sony's warranty.

You can of course buy one 'pre-hacked'' to multi-region, but then you still have a warranty with the retailer anyway as long as they don't go out of business. I've not had mine long either (just before Christmas) so I'm praying nothing needs to be done under warranty now that I've done the conversion myself!

There's no 'may' about it, it does invalidate the warranty - but it depends if the service agent notices!.

Which I suppose in turn really depends on what's wrong with the machine and if it gives them any call to delve.
