Our teenager dropped her brand new iPod Classic and it has killed it. Are Apple very strict on accidental damage repairs in warranty period?

The repair price is £96.29 as quoted on the website for out of warranty repair.

Is it worth trying sending it back to Apple or will they see the scuffs and point blank refuse to fix it?

Anyone tried this, what happened?

I have just checked the warranty on the Apple website and as I strongly suspected, accidental damage isn't covered under the warranty. You could try and tell them it's just stopped working but I doubt you'll fool them - they'll know what's happened to it.

Do you have accidental damage to personal items away from the home on your insurance policy? Also, some credit cards offer accidental damage cover for goods bought with the card.

Did you get the insurance cover? Mine is £2 a month from pc world, and i got mine replaced (30gig video) with a 60gig video (they were out of 30gb ones at the time). Thing is it was only a software problem apple fixed about a week later.

If you didnt, some places let you get cover within a month or so of buying it, so you could consider that? If you do, id leave it a week or so, otherwise itll look dodgy.

No the warranty does not cover accidential damage was more thinking how good or badly they enforce it?

Do not have accdential cover on house insurance

I am so annoyed with her, it was a week old and she had it on her lap on the school bus (not in her blazer where it should be). The bus driver breaked and the iPod hit the deck.

Dropping the iPod is very easily done to be honest. I've done it several times. You have to have it out of your pocket sometimes to sort out the music you want to play and adjust volume etc. When I'm out and about I actually have it in a case - a rubbery type thing that can hang around the neck and I have a leather one too that you can just pop in your pocket, so if it fell it would be protected. I bought those when I got the iPod - I knew what was coming, I'm as clumsy as they come. I've still dropped it though a couple of times just outside the front door - without a case, onto the concrete step but thankfully it was fine. I've nearly dropped it down the loo a couple of times too because it's been in my trouser pocket.

I would have thought the iPod would have survived a drop onto the floor of a bus or even hitting the back of another seat. It takes a lot more than that to kill it in my experience. It's not like it's been dropped 20ft onto a concrete floor and then stamped on.

Have found this on the Apple Discussion Forum. Will try this when back home tonight:

10 Simple Steps To Fix Your iPod That Is Stuck In A Continuous Reset Loop:

1) While the iPod was resetting itself over and over (continuously resetting itself), press the Play/Pause button and the center select button simultaneously, for about 5 seconds, and it will display that it is now in disk mode.
2) Start up iTunes on your computer and then connect the iPod to your computer with the USB cable.
3) Click on the iPod in the left pane, select "Restore" to restore it to its original blank state. Follow the prompts to continue.
4) When the computer completes the Restore update, and it displays a message saying that the iPod will disappear and reappear in iTunes in a minute, immediately disconnect the iPod (unplug it from your USB cable).
5) On the iPod, you should see the main menu, in a few seconds. Pick a couple of settings to update for example the English language, and Eastern Time Zone (New York or Washington, DC), etc.
6) Press and hold the Play/Pause button to power the iPod off.
7) Re-connect the iPod to your comptuer with the USB cable.
8) Start syncing using iTunes, as normal.
9) All should be well.
10) Remember to always click on Eject in iTunes, and waiting for visual confirmation, before disconnecting the iPod.

Lessons learnt all round. Buy a case on day 1!
