710 error message when trying to play dvds
Brian Curry

Recently I have been unable to play dvds whilst making a timed recording on the hard drive. I get a message "Operation denied whilst recording".

This first happened last week when watching a dvd. A scheduled tv programme interupted the dvd when it started to record on the hd. I had to wait until the recording had finished before I could continue watching the dvd. A right pain!

Has anyone encountered this? If so, any chance of a remedy without having to resort to an authorised dealer?

a firmware update perhaps ?

just put in model number, this will give you manuals and possible firmware update if there is one

you will need to burn to dvd / cd if your computer can do this

Have visited the Sony link as above. no firmware update was mentioned on it. Incidentally - how do I check the firmware version?

I have encountered this, is your player multi-region? You cannot play an NTSC disc while recording to the HDD. Even if you are not Multi Region some cheapskate company's discs are region 2 NTSC, and they rely on your player sorting out the difference (this makes it a bit cheaper for them as they only need to produce one master for the whole world). The worst big name offenders of this that I am aware of are BBC DVD (whose library is not handled inhouse at the BBC anymore) and Universal Music (not sure at all about Universal Pictures though). If you are playing any recent disc from these labels you will not be able to record to the HDD. The recorder sees a timer recording as the priority and will stop the DVD in order to do the scheduled recording. Very boring, but almost certainly, your complaint is not with SONY but with the DVD companies concerned.

My model is a multi-region RDR HXD 710.

The dvd I was playing at the time was "Under the desert sky - Andrea Bocelli" designated region 0.

I have had this machine since Nov '05 and it has never happened before!

on page 59 of the manual is some instances when you CANT watch a dvd whilst recording

2 things to try ; on page 101 is a reset of machine under the title recorder does not operate normally and the old favourite switch the plug off for a while

After looking at page 29 in the instruction manual I decided to check the dvd of Andrea Bocelli. Guess what? It was NTSC! So "problem" solved. Sorry (but glad) if you know what I mean.
