oooh sardines, cant say i love em, but my mum, back in the bad old days of the 3 day week and power cuts, used to make a sardine 'pate' which we used to have on toast, just browned off under the grill

tin of sardines
1/4 pack of butter ( not marge)
lemon juice
pepper

mix it all up and bung in the fridge till hard

then spread on toast and put under the grill with a sprinkling of worcester sauce...pure comfort food

I try to eat at least one tin of sardines per week - for the health benefit. Although I'm not really that keen on them. Usually make a sandwich or two.

I prefer the ones in tomato sauce, cooked tomato has it own health benefits.

I recall an episode of Coronation Street, from plenty years ago when I still watched it, where Reg Holdsworth was advising Curly that 'customers who buy sardines in tomato sauce are a different class than those who buy it in olive oil'. Don't know why that stuck in my memory.

Yes, fresh sardines are lovely and still cheap.

I will eat tinned, but not with the tomato in them, don't like tomato unless on pizza, in CCC, Spag Bol etc.

Tinned sardines are ok but fresh ones are divine... easy to cook... cheap... filling and nutritous.

They are fantastic cooked on a barbie with a squeeze of lemon juice ..

Fresh sardines are delicious, but cooking them in the house tends to stink the place out, so I only have fresh ones when the weather's good enough for a barbeque.
I love the canned ones in tomato sauce, mashed up and grilled on toast.

Poured out of the tin into a saucepan for a minute or two, then whacked on a bit of buttered toast.
