The Appalling move by apple to charge £12.99 or $20 for a simple app update to the ipod touch was even met with silence when announced at the keynote..

Apple give us great design and software.. but there habbit or ripping people off with both value for money vs specs and outrageous itunes charges.

Found this petition online- click to read more:

6 Features at £2 each. But thats not the point- New iPod touch customers and current and iphone users have the upgrade free with no difference in cost. once again Apple letting down early adopters

you were happy to buy it with the features it had then for the price you paid. if you want to upgrade you can, at a very low price.

new ipod touches do indeed have the extra 5 apps on them for the same price you paid. that's technology. i'm typing this on a 1.33 Ghz ibook that cost me £800 two years ago. today i could get a much much faster macbook for £100 pounds less. but i'm not complaining that a new macbook owner is getting things for free; i recognise that things move rapidly in technology.

iphones are not getting new apps for free; they already had these apps. they are getting a new firmware version. but it was also made clear that iphones would be getting software upgrades along the way. apple never said anything of the sort about ipod touch. additionally iphone user pay a monthly fee (a proportion of which goes to apple) whereas ipod users do not.

suck it in. you got what you paid for. if you want more, it's very cheap.

Here here, I've got £12.99 so I've spent it! Can't we start a petition to stop people whining about it.

You don't want to spend the money then don't spend it! And yes that is the point.

So you paid £269 for your Touch, yes you paid that, no one forced you. No one forces you to go and buy a newspaper day in day out or a sandwich from the local shop. When your car needs petrol or new tyres you don't get them free.

To those who don't want to pay for it, stop whining and go and buy a couple of 'Big Macs' instead!

I could use it without it, i have done for the last 3months and it works fine,

I have paid £12 because i want the apps that are available, I dont need them to operate it just an add on,

Although its sh!t that new users already get them on the ipods i know, and the fact that my update didnt work so i dont have the apps and dont have my £12

I wonder if I am missing the point, but it doesn't appear to actually do anything that you can't get to via safari?. Unless anyone can convince me otherwise, my cash is staying in my pocket

I don't mind paying the £12.99 for the upgrade - in fact, that's what I did, but what you're saying makes no sense. Please explain why Apple TV gets a free software upgrade with brand new features - Apple TV owners certainly aren't paying a monthly fee.

---

I'm wondering - what happens to people who have bought an iPod touch in the last few days from stores that are carrying slightly older stock? Are they also expected to pay £12.99 for the upgrade as well?

there are two reasons why apple tv are getting a free software upgrade. first, appletv revenues are accounted for on a subscription basis so that there is no contravention of the sarbane oxley act by offering goods for free. secondly, apple want to give the update for free because they want appletv owners to rent movies thereby making apple movie rental service popular and profitable.

There's no reason why Apple can't change the iPod touch revenues to be accounted for on a subscription basis.

Apple could have charged just £1 for the update and it wouldn't have contravened the Sarbane Oxley Act - £12 does seem like quite a high markup (and some Apple users complain about the high price of Microsoft software! ).

WTF, paying for an update? There's one way to shaft all your customers up the arse, one by one.

Even the apple heads were a little silent in shock when Jobs announced the fact and price. Quite funny as the wool wools crashed to a silence.
I have paid for the update but find it very unfair to existing customers. I think apple are geting to comfortable with charging high price and money making.

you can't change the accounting system after the revenue has been received.

they could have charged £1. but they decided to charge £12. seems fair to me for five apps. if people think they are too expensive, they won't buy them. i suspect, despite the whining, they will be a big seller.

you can now buy five applications to run on your wife's ipod: mail, stocks, notes, weather, and google maps. the cost is £12.99. some are whining that there is a price at all for these apps; they want them as a gift.

Thanks for that Sananda, as you say whats £12.99 at the end of the day if you want those extra applications?

And it's an IF, you don't HAVE to buy them

How many people will use stocks, notes etc, and you can already sign in to your isp with your Ipod touch, as for the weather... look outside

Early adoptors are just annoyed at being treated differently compared to new owners - and rightfully so. Who can remember this quote from Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer:

Quote:
“Apple plans to roll out "new software features and entirely new applications" for the iPhone over time, Oppenheimer said. But the company wants to keep the early adopters of the iPhone happy, since it's counting on those people to spread the gospel to the rest of the world, he said.”

Unlike the iPhone it seems as if Apple can't be bothered keeping the early adopters of the touch happy and don't care about "counting on those people to spread the gospel to the rest of the world"

i'm glad you posted that quote. it shows that it was clear from the beginning that there would be upgrades for iphone; that's why its revenues are accounted for on a subscription basis. apple at no point said anything similar about ipod touch and does not account on a subscription basis.

plus apple take monthly charges from iphone users; so it's hardly free for them when we get an update.

You conveniently forget the announcement by Steve Jobs where he announced there was a SDK in production for the iPod touch which would allow developers to create applications for it. I would consider that to be a significant upgrade.

And I'll say it again: it seems as if Apple can't be bothered keeping the early adopters of the touch happy and don't care about "counting on those people to spread the gospel to the rest of the world."

you think they'll be free????

no-one at apple has ever said anything about free apps for ipod touches.

Nobody at Apple ever said anything about paying for software upgrades either on the iPod touch.

well i don't follow your meandering points.

first, you argue that these apps (and they're apps not just software upgrades) ought to be free because the software update for apple tv was. when the different circumstances of apple tv are pointed out to you (subscription revenue and a commercial decision to promote film rentals), you argue that they should retrospectively change the accounting method or charge £1. when it's pointed out to you that it's not possible to change the accounting method you say that £12 is too expensive. then you oddly argue that ipod touch owners are being treated differently to iphone owners conveniently forgetting that iphone owners are paying monthly for iphone service for 18 months with a percentage going to apple. when it is pointed out to you that it was always planned that as part of their service iphone owners were always told they would get updates whereas no such pronouncement exists about ipod touch, you irrelevantly bring up the subject of the SDK (which is of course for third party developers to produce apps which they will most likely sell). finally (i hope) you say no-one said there would be charges for additional apps. i have no idea why you would assume that additional apps would be free on this basis. apple is not a charity. it sells software. for money. buy the products or don't. but don't make asinine arguments you can't support in favour of gifts.

You have to manually select it from the store.

The simple fact is that when the iPod Touch was released there was never anything that said that Apple would release extra apps for it, and certainly nothing that said that if they did they would be free.

It's all well and good saying that Apple should make it free out of goodwill but where does goodwill end and stupidity start? They can't offer every update for everything for free. Should all additions to iLife be free in the hope that people might say nice things to people they know who might then go buy it themselves?
