I came across an old leaflet yesterday from when I was in a choir and we performed at a local church when I was about 11. There were three solo singers also performing and there was a little blurb on each of them and one of them was Jonathan. He was 16 at the time and it says he wanted to become a professional singer.

It is now up on You-Tube. What a performance. I was at the recording & what this doesn't show is Alan face during the performance which was just total 'amazement'. His reaction afterwards partly shows just how stunned he was.

Last night I went to a BBC Recording and heard for the second time in a week Jonathan sing Here's to the Hero's - along with some other tracks from his new album but this time with a full orchestra - if possible it was even better.

I am singling out this track because it is just amazing and anyone given half a chance to see him perform should grab the opportunity with both hands as it is something very special. To TV broadcasters - have this young man on to sing live, he is maturing like a fine wine - you will not regret it.

I like Jonathan`s version of Here`s to the Heros.......comes a close second to the brilliant (and best version in my opinion) by the Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis, who sings it with such power and passion

Sorry Olga this is obviously your opinion but I find this version very poppy and rather insipid certainly nowhere near the power of Mr A but then again I have been lucky enough to be sitting right in front of him when he sang it so I guess I have first hand experience

Quote from Paul Gambaccini last night on introducing this track - 'the words were put to the 'Dances with Wolves' theme by Don Black for a John Barry tribute album by the Ten Tenors but here is a tenor with the voice of ten’

Thanks for that link Olga.

Nice voice - and a lovely version but I agree with Daisy Chain a bit on the poppy side for me - takes away from the emotion of the song.

I prefer Jonathan's version because his voice is more classical and he portrayed the emotion of the song so touchingly it almost leapt out at you through the tv screen. It must have been amazing to actually be there live in the studio listening to it.

Seems that Jonathan has made a fan in royal circles!

From the Daily Mail today:

Quote:
“Housewives' favourite Jonathan Ansell, former member of the X Factor band G4, has a new admirer - the Duchess of York.

Fergie, fresh from filming a documentary in Hull about obesity in Britain, saw Ansell, 25, singing on gardener-turned-chatshow host Alan Titchmarsh's TV show and was smitten.

The next day, she asked the show's producer Nick Bullen - who is also overseeing her film - if he could send her an advance copy of Ansell's debut solo album, Tenor At The Movies, before its release next week.

Clearly, Fergie's royal connections still count.”

He's even got 4 stars from The Sun.

Jonathan Ansell - Tenor at the Movies

SINGLED out by Simon Cowell as the star voice of G4 when they stunned X-Factor in 2004, Jonathan Ansell launches his solo career with this elegant album of movie favourites. He grafts cleverly crafted lyrics on to film tunes so familiar they are embedded in the fabric of our weekends. Think Gladiator, Godfather, Gone with the Wind & Chariots of Fire. Less well known scores are handled no less melodically as his voice soars over a stately Handel theme from Stanley Kubricks masterpiece Barry Lyndon.

Comparisons with Pavorotti are a little far-fetched but he has the style and range of a true Italian lyric tenor, switching from wine bar intimacy to stadium filling crescendo.

Much more than just the G4 pretty boy

This is so much about establishing himself as a talented classical artist. Not easy having come from a reality tv show perceived by many to be 'tacky' pop talent show. It will take time but once heard he has people gushing about his talent. I agree you have to hear Jonathan live. He needs no theatricals or gimmics just simplicity - his voice. An invitation to sing at Classical Brits is massive for him - placing him squarely with the best of this genre.

Wow - these reviews keep coming. Particularly love the following: he gives a performance already polished, already self-assured, while singing with a wonderfully accessible tone often absent in operatic recordings.

Having seen him twice now live over the last few weeks the performer he is now is miles away from the student we saw making his way through X-Factor. The sheer talent was always there as Simon spotted on day 1 but what a difference. What is that voice going to be like in 10 years time??

It's lovely to think what Jon will be like in 10 years -he has a special gift indeed.

Interesting you say that as I've been really impressed with the radio interviews I've heard. When he was part of G4 they took it in turns to answer so you really didn't get a full conversation going. He has come across as so articulate but also very media savvy. No 'ums' & gives so much to each answer but very careful to not say anything that could be misconstrued. He's been pushed by DJ's on a few occasions but bats it back with humour. It's felt as though Universal have let him off the leash & he is free to deal with interviews as he wants rather than the scripted style you so often get.

You may well have a point...he seems as relaxed as I've seen him in a long time when being interviewed....
