REC to AVI
Zack
19-01-2008
Hi on my old computer I used to be able to get my topfield rec files to convert to avi with just a few steps really. It was just opening it in VideoReDo (trial) and cutting it roughly down, then saving it as mpg and cutting it properly in movie maker then saving it as avi from there, this was ok as I have only been using it for 2 weeks, just wondered is there a tool that goes straight from REC (MPEG2?) to AVI (MPEG4?)

Basically on my new install when I try to open a file in any of the tools it just crashes.

Are there any tools that anyone can recommend? I have looked around but as this has been out for over a year a lot of the links are dead and out of date

Thanks
Zack

VideoRedo is still pretty popular, as is MPEG StreamClip; www.toppy.org.uk/downloads/windows.php will have some pointers for you.

MPEG streamclip won't work until I install Quicktime Alternative but even then it doesn't work, I guess that's why VideoReDo keeps crashing as well

Any particular reason it has to be MPEG4 avi? I use MPEG Streamclip to trim them, then convert them to MPEG with MP2 audio. These usually run to about 600~Mb for a 30 min BBC program, and these require no re-encoding when burning to DVD video.

You could try MPEG Video Wizard DVD, at www.womble.com
They do a trial period

The Toppy seems really slow in transferring files. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

Just thought i'd add that VLC plays .rec files natively if you just want to watch them on your pc.

Ive been using pvastrumento (from the download page on www.toppy.org.uk)
It's quick and creates files that can be edited in WMM
Oops, just reread your original question, no it just replicates the environment that you originally had, sorry
