Thinking of getting a new iPod - Advice?
Katie841
20-01-2008
I've currently got an iPod mini (4gb), and I've had it for a good few years now and I'm thinking about getting a new one.

I'm not really interested in the video aspect of things, so I'm looking for the best one for music. I still want to stick with an iPod though, so if anyone has any suggestions on which model would be the best to get (and why), it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

how many GBs of music do you have?

I've recently deleted a lot of the songs I had on there (I change them pretty regularly), but I'm not keen on having a lower GB than I already have, so I'm looking to have one that's 4GB or more.

well the nano comes in 4GB and 8GB if you're interested in capacity around that level; it's very cute and small.

Yeah, I know a few people who have a Nano. Those were the ones I was looking at, lol. I was just wondering if it's worth paying for, considering I have a 4GB one now. Basically, is a Nano going to make any difference to what I already have?

Well it still just plays music in your pocket, so from that angle not really.

Although its a much nicer unit, much smaller and much thinner than the mini, full colour screen, you can watch video on it too if you want to. If you get the 8gb version it will also give u a lot more space to add more songs in coming months.

If you think it's time to upgrade, get an 8 gig Nano, they're lovely, I own one!!

I know you don't want to play video but how about internet related things? The iPod touch is amazing. 8Gb (£199) or 16GB (£269)

I have to say although I love my Creative Zen, I got my GF a 8GB Nano for Christmas and it is a beautiful design.

The way it integrates and syncs with iTunes is quite nice and easy for her to use. Although I end up having to do it for her mostly...

Very impressed with it, although I will stick to my Creative... If the iPod played Divx files, then I might be converted!

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm seriously considering ordering myself an 8GB iPod Nano, especially as they've just launched one in pink for Valentine's Day. I just want to be sure before I order it though, is there really any point in me getting this considering I have the mini already? I already said I'm not too fussed about the video aspect, I just thought I could do with an upgraded version, and a larger GB too. Or am I better off sticking with the mini for now?

Any thoughts?

I've got a classic, its good, but I cant ever see myself filling it, but i prefer its size to the 3g Nano, i think its a little small/delicate for my hands.

i never really thought about video on the go until i got my 30gb ipod 5th gen - now im always watching on the train.

i also got a belkin aa battery pack which extends the battery life - about twice as long with fresh alkaline batteries

Got an 80Gb classic, but given a choice I'd go for the Ipod Touch. 80Gb is a bit of a luxury, and the screen and access on the Touch is fantastic. Just need someone to buy my Classic first....

Is it just that you have run out of memory on your old iPod?

Just that you can upgrade the iPod Mini to 16gb for under £40 by swapping the hard drive for a 16gb compact flash card.

I have posted on this forum a little while ago with a site that tells you how to do the upgrade (with photos etc).

It should also increase the battery life as well.

It should not be too hard to do if you, or somebody you know is slightly technically minded.

Apart from that I'd go for the 8gb Nano.

Hey guys

I've got a really old 20GB Ipod and a 4 GB Ipod mini, and the battery-life on both of them is pretty much zero. I've decided to upgrade (I do love my gadgets!), and am seriously thinking about getting a 16GB Ipod Touch.

I've seen quite a few places on the web selling at a lower price than Apple themselves are selling at, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience of sites like www.dabs.com? I've seen that Amazon are selling them for £234 without the Jan firmware upgrade (£12.99 I think?? - WHY?!), so will the other cheap places be doing the same?

Additionally, has anyone bought any totally must-have accessories for their Ipod Touch? And are the sticky protective covers actually any good?? I don't want it to get all scratched up, but I also don't want to stick some naff sticky back plastic on my shiny new toy and have it end up looking pants!!

Cheers

It's funny because you're in the exact same situation I was...I'd had my mini for a few years, and wanted a new one...and, as everyone else has advised - I went for the new Nano, 8gb.

I wasn't bothered about video, but I'm thrilled I have it now, because it lets me play games from the iTunes store, which is a great feature.

Aside from that, it's just a crafty little thing...the picture quality is great - having colour screen is fabulous...I really don't regret it.

Good luck with your iPod pursuits!
