Thinking of buying a 15gb iPod. However it says it requires either firewire or usb 2.0, of which i have neither. Will it work with old style usb 1.1, and has anyone actually got it to work with a 1.1 connection?

firewire is faster, firewire cards can be bought on apple uk online at £49, (prob cheaper at computer fairs) but if you buy it with your ipod on apple.com/uk you will get free delivery, also apple offer laser engraving on the ipod for £15.

the apple ipod is so cool, i have the 20gb model

Thing is im getting a new Sony Vaio desktop in a few months with all the connections i will ever need (until sony invent some new ones!) so dont really want to buy a firewire card. I was just wondering if it would work with usb1.1, until i get new comp, as it mentions nothing other than usb2.0. I dont want to wait for new comp to get ipod, but dont want it and not be able to use it until i get new comp! cheers

Yes, it will work with USB 1.1 but the transfers will just be a lot slower.

To be honest any half decent new PC should now come with either USB 2 or firewire built in, preferably both. But if you've got your heart set on one that supports neither the you should get yourself a card to support them - it'll mean the difference between transferring your collection in minutes or in hours.

Cheers. The new comp im getting in a few months has firewire and usb 2.0, so thats why i dont want to buy a firewire card for this comp, will be a waste. just dont want to wait to get my ipod! so for a few months will just put up with usb1.1 till i get firewire.

talking of iPod....

my solution to piracy :

basically get sorted everywhere else, and for windows, the iTunes service available for mac users in the states, and combine this with flooding the P2P networks with dodgy tracks wrongly titled, or with beeps, interuptions or loops.

i would think if people had access to a reliable vast catalogue of music online, available at a sensible price ie 99p per track, people would use it, as has been seen with the success of iTunes in the states.

I think 99p is overpriced per song. The whole reason piracy is so popular is people refuse to pay £12-£15 for an album, which works out roughly £1 a song. This way you dont even get the disc or artwork, so it will end up more expensive. The record industy deserves all they get, so too the dvd companies, for blatantly overpricing.

thom yorke was being interviewed about this recently and suggested that the record companies had invited this bad karma on themselves for overpricing, and thus disillusioning their market for years, as well as seeming to promote a narrower and narrower range of music.

whilst I can agree with the record co's up to a point, i think they're quite wrong to equate numbers of downloads with lost sales, and fails to take into account the broadening of what young people want to spend their money on - eg console games, mobile telephony, dvd etc.

99p perhaps is still slightly too much, but at 99 cents in the US it would be bound to be 99p. for things like artwork, people would still be able to buy cds, but be able to buy individual tracks as well, which would be a good thing, for yer iPod and all.

I have to argree

Dvd's are over-priced, but i have seen them come down in the last few years

I have had a dvd player for nearly 4 years (not the same one, had 5 diff models/makes)

Anyway, did you remember the Dvd section in your Woolies and Hmv, compered to now. so they have some down. but very rare i buy dvd's in shops now unless the have sales (hmv etc), all the new ones i buy from places like

www.play.com
www.cd-wow.com
www.futureent.com
www.dvdconcept.com

some are expensive compared to others, but you will find cheaper one's on one's etc

And all have Free Del

Yes, it will work on USB 1.1, but it will be horrendously slow. A FireWire card is available from Dabs.com for about £14 including delivery.

I got my 10gb iPod a while back, it's saved my backside numerous times ! Great for music, great for backups!
