I'm a firm believer in this.

If we cut everything out of our diet we were told to, we would eat nothing.

I have come to the conclusion that the problems with obesity and poor health is not down to what people eat, but how much people eat.

My diet involves anything I feel like - choccy bars, fry-ups, whatever! As long as I stay significantly under 2,500 calories.

I'm a bit lost here

Of course it's possible to eat healthily, to eat well and to eat cheaply, it just takes a lot longer to prepare and requires more thought than bunging a curry in the microwave for three minutes...

Well there are... you can buy your raw materials from a supermarket as well as anything else. Though I would say that your raw veg and meats are better from a grocer and butchers if you can find one,

Once you've built up a little stock of cooking supplies like spices, herbs, oils etc, it doesn't cost much to cook from scratch. If you shop around and get to know the right places and times to shop, you can do it quite cheaply.

Why are you lost?

I think most people can find 15minutes to make a quality meal... show me a man who hasn't got fifteen minutes and I'll show you a man who spends too much time watching TV

Do what I do. Cook in the commercials!

Eat to live, don't live to eat.

Remember, if you eat large meals, your stomach expands and demands more each time.

Use a smaller plate--chew your food well--and listen to your stomach. If you're not hungry, don't feel you have to clear the plate.

Try to eat more fresh and raw food, instead of processed foods which are loaded with sugar and salt.

So supermarkets have some sort of a duty to provide us with healthy instant dinners, have they?
Why?
Whats wrong with cooking your own from scratch?

I'm pretty sure if Mr Oliver and his cronies got their way, we would all have farms, where we would grow our own organic fruit and veg, meat etc.

Alternatively, go to Tesco - and if you are really lucky, you'll find it all in there. Mind though, food that isn't grown in this country is killing all the polar bears because it's been flown half way round the world......

Everything is speed produced for the ever increasing population, years back when everything was organic! we were a healthier nation! bring back proper food! The alternative to that of what jamie is dead against is an expensive hobbie in modern day Britain not so in Britain of years gone by! 'Organic' as it has been labelled has come at a price!

For those of us who want to eat well and eat healthily, it can be done but it does require a bit of effort and a bit of compromise. Yes organic fruit and veg is more expensive than standard but if you can afford it, perhaps by buying less of something else, the taste is so much better. Organic is more affordable if you buy whats in season and not whats been flown half way round the world. Do you really want to to eat strawberries and asparagus in winter? If you do you'll pay a premium organic or not - and you won't get much flavour for your money. Eat seasonally and even organic fruit and veg could work out less than you'd think - particularly if you keep your eye's open for offers.

I admit that there are some really dirt cheap ready meals out there - usually full of sugar, fat, salt and preservatives in one or more combinations. This is what gets you hooked on to them and the cheap price encourages people to buy even more. Cheap, fresh meals can be cooked at home with a little bit of forethought and planning - but you can't walk in the door and be eating 6mins later as you can with a ready meal. I work with a lot of people who keep telling me they want to cook good food - I've given them recipes and even the herbs and spices to do them so that they have less to buy - but the top and bottom of it is that they can't be bothered! Its too much trouble, its too easy to shove a plastic tray in the microwave or dial the local takeway.

Personally I don't eat ready meals at all as I can't stand salt and preservatives give me terrible indigestion. Yes some nights I get home from work and I want something quick and easy too - you can't get much quicker than pasta and a repertoire of quick sauces - some of which I can have on the table in around 15mins.

There are alternatives out there, not all of them will be as cheap as we would like (and quite honestly its a disgrace that anyone in this country can't afford to eat decent food) and some will require effort - but only you can make it!

Get off your backside and get digging a nice little veg patch, just around the back of your old Anderson shelter. Come summer and you'll be able to have a delicious leaf of round lettuce before you pop off down the dance hall in your brothel creepers, maybe even room for a SPAM fritter when you get back - if you haven't run out of powdered egg that is.
