Honestly, I seem to be completely and utterly inept when it comes to cooking the most simple things!

I just made myself a boiled egg there. Boiled the water, put some salt in the water, then placed the egg. Left it there for a good 5-6 minutes (I like hard-boiled) and the egg was still raw in the middle

The other night, I microwaved myself a chicken korma (do not judge me ) and I actually managed to melt the container to the korma, rendering it completely inedible!

I've set cakes on fire. I've had chicken explode in my face.

Is anyone else this bad?!

I'm probably not that bad Holly {or am I???} but I am def not a natural in the kitchen

I can make a few staples pretty well (spag bol, chilli, roast dinner etc) and have a few practiced specialities but Nigella Lawson I am not

I've managed to set numerous dishclothes on fire, have been accused of "poisoning" someone with a veggie pasta dish (they had a stomach bug anyway ) and I've melted several plastic sieves before I invested in a stainless steel one....

hahahaha I'm not bad, but can be lazy Saying that I'm sure there's something simple I consistently mess up, but can't think of what it is right now

I think it stops it from cracking

Yup. It was yet another chicken korma (I do eat other things...). I followed the instructions to the letter. Took the thing out of the microwave, peeled back the plastic to mix it around a bit, and the chicken went 'bang' as soon as it met cold air. It was bloody painful

If you get it out of the fridge before you put the water on to boil and then put it in just as it's boiling it works well... Leave for 4 minutes (the optimum time to grill the perfect slice of toast, ) and voila!

My mates brother once screwed up a pot noodle - He burnt it and melted the plastic

Does it? Ive not heard that before.

I can't see how it can flavour the egg really, because it can't get through the shell.

I love to cook and according to my friends and family I am pretty good at it. But soft boil an egg? Just cannot do it.! I might have solved that problem though. My son bought me the egg perfect egg timer from lakeland and have tried it a couple of times with near perfect results. So I may have cracked it!!!!

Now that is pathetic

Let's hope he doesn't try something like a souffle for many years yet.

Apparently water can get through the shell of an egg (dont ask me how i know that !!). I think i read somewhere not to wash egg shells - because the bacteria from the poo can get through the shell. Weird but true.

Im not too bad in the kitchen. I know one of two tasty receipes, but to be honest i tend to open jars / tins a lot of the time. Take tonight. Im cooking a scrummy yummy steak in red wine sauce with pasta bows. The red wine sauce is straight from a tin. Its lovely though. Pour over the steak and shove in the oven for 50 mins.

It's probably to raise the boiling temperature of the water.

I do the same when poaching an egg and have now devised a method where once the water is boiling (in a deep pan) I then turn off the heat entirely and THEN crack an egg and put it in the water. Leave it a few minutes and it's cooked.

I will try the same with a boiled egg and not have the heat on once the water has boiled, (will take longer obviously) so that once perfected it will be constant as long as the egg is the same size. I imagine 7-8 minutes will do it.

Egg shells are porous, they will take on strong flavours if stored next to them in the fridge
