I am considering buying a Sony 870 DVD recorder. It will be my first venture into DVD from VHS! I would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

I bought a few days ago, the 770 - essentially exactly the same machine, but with a smaller hard drive - 120gb.

This is a surperb machine - recorded freeview images on HQ look amazing.

The only thing to mention, is remember there is a bug with EPG recordings potentially to be erased after setting them - see the thread below about this.

It woud mean you checking the firmware version on your machine (instructions are below in the previous thread) and if it isn't v1.63 or 1.65 (which mine wasn't - and I only got mine a couple of days ago) then you would do wise to again, follow instructions in the thread below and download and burn to a CDR the new firmware - can be done from the Sony website mentioned in that thread..

I did this, and although a little unsure as to what I was doing, it did update fine.

So, apart from this, it is an excellent machine. I have always owned Sony DVD recorders - this one does act a little differently from the others i have had (just in functionality and things)so it took me a good few hours to get used to it, but if you are coming straight from VHS, you will be very impressed - I'm sure!

Many thanks Paul C, I'll make note of the above and check the firmaware. Will repoprt back after I buy it. By the way, the dealer recommends that I get an HDMI lead saying it will give better picture quality than the usual SCART lead. Any ideas?

The firmware will be the old version, any product available will have been assembled months ago.

As long as you've got a decent TV it will make not the slightest bit of difference - I've installed lots of these on Sony LCD's, and connected them via RGB SCART, Component, and HDMI - you can't tell any difference at all.

Now, if the customer has asked for HDMI, I just connect via that, I don't show them there's no difference!

I see. The dealer is threatening to throw in a free HDMI lead to secure the sale; maybe I'll just ask him for a further discount. By the way, and please excuse my ignorance, does the HDMI lead need its own socket on the TV?

Yes, if the TV doesn't have an HDMI socket you have nowhere to plug it in.
