Atkins Diet
Has anybody else tried this diet?
I've been doing this diet for 2 weeks now, and i've gone from 15 stone to just under 14 stone. I am male and only 24 and am aware of the risks, but it seems to be working and has got me going back to the gym on a regular basis. Has anybody got any advice, recipes or stories regarding this diet. |

Hi, we have both done this diet in the past. It certainly works. My husband lost over a stone on the 2 week induction, and I lost a lot as well.
The problem is, like any diet it does get boring! Sounds brill at first, as much egg and bacon as you like, steaks etc, but it does get boring. Also, the faster you lose weight, the faster it goes back on (and some). Far better to do something like Slimming World, where you can have a Red (protein) day OR a Green (carb/veggie) day, it gives you a choice. Good luck though

Thanks,
I know what you mean though as it is starting to get a bit boring. Never thought I'd think that about eating eggs, bacon, steak etc. Never really had an interest in cooking untill I started this diet, but now i'm quite keen. |

I haven't done the Atkins diet per se but I do know a thing or two about not eating carbs and there are a few good sites you can join up with to give you advice and some very inventive recipes:
http://forum.lowcarber.org/ http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/ http://www.lowcarbsite.com/forum/ and for anyone who tries to talk you out of it by blabbing on about cholesterol, fat, death yada yada, have a look at these sites: http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/index.html http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/ That should keep you going for a while. |

It's inventor Dr Atkins was clinically obese when he died. Take from that what you want.

I did it about 3 years ago, I was about 1.5 stone over weight. I lost the weight super quick, it was incredible as I've alwasys found it difficult to loose weight.
Also I didnt feel hungry, HOWEVER! Once I started eating carbs again, I had the most unbelievable sugar cravings, and I've never had a sweet tooth. I guess my biggest issue with it is, that it's so unmaintainable. But if it's working, go for it and good luck

That was where you went wrong, Atkins is not supposed to be a quick fix, it is a lifetime eating plan ...you are not supposed to eat carbs again, at least not up to the quantities that you did before. Would you give a heroin addict who has gone clean another fix and expect them not to relapse. You have to think of it that way. Carbs are addictive.

In that case it's ridiculous. No-one wants to be on a 'diet' for life. 99% of people would find the idea of never eating another carb preposterous.
the stage you move on when you want to maintain is pretty hard to eat enough of the recommended carbs after you have gone a while with a reduced amount |

I don't follow Atkins because he advocates a lot of vegetables, in fact I was eating low/no carb before Atkins even wrote his book. I don't eat carbs, I'm not sick and haven't been for the last 30 years. Plenty of protein but even more fat, about 70% of daily calories, is the ideal. There are essential fats and proteins but there are no essential carbs, the body gets along just dandy without them. Only a carb addict in denial would say that he can't give them up, but that is because he doesn't want to miss his fix. |

I don't see why, excessive carb consumption is the main cause of the illnesses of modern life. And you misread my post, Atkins and low carb is not a 'diet'. That implies a short term eating plan that will eventually stop, low/no carb is for life. Why would people find not eating carbs preposterous when it is those that got them fat in the first place.

Don't do it - you'll lose weight quick BUT gain it back quicker as soon as you eat carbs. It's just another faddy diet IMO.

You are missing the point, you won't gain back the weight because you don't eat carbs again back to the level that made you fat in the first place. If you go truly low carb you will stay below a level that will allow you to gain weight. It is physically impossible to gain weight on a low carb/high fat diet.
5 million years without carbs and then 10,000 years with........it sounds like eating carbs is the faddy one. |

How many people do you think will be willing to do it though? The idea of a diet is that people want to lose a bit of weight, not completely change what they eat forever.

which is why diets don't work, you have to change your eating habits to maintain your weight once you have lost the pounds you want to lose, however, never i don't approve of the atkins diet, fast weight loss is not as sustainable as gradually losing weight by changing you eating habits.

Diets work for me. I diet every year after my Summer Holiday and also after Xmas and always get back to the same weight.

How come they eat so much white rice in China and they're not fat? It's all about quantity. In the affluent West, we eat too much of every food stuff (apart from enough veg perhaps!).
Also carbs have got a lot of bad press, but without them, we couldn't have supported the world populations that we do, and there's also an argument that eating wheat provided the West with enough energy to live AND enough to fuel their brains, hence the great technological advances, but I don't know if I believe that necessarily. A low-carb diet is bad for the planet - too much protein means using more land for animals which isn't economically viable. We just need to eat LESS! |

My sister & her husband tried this a little while ago & they ended up with the most foul breath! - It was like they had rotting cat food in their mouths
