My mother was up as far as Shetland and they dont speak like

Aye they do and sometimes even a lot worse. The Western Isles accent is even funnier, it sound like a cross between Irish and Swedish.

Was watching a programme about the Top Ten British ancient monuments the other night. 2 of them were in the Orkneys and the folk talked just like Cameron.

On another point,perhaps Camerons mum isn't from the Orkneys herself, which may account for why she doesn't sound Orcadian.

Orkney, like most place, has a wide range of accents: yorkshire, london, cornwall, birmingham, glasgow, abderdeen etc. The indigenous accent is though like cameron's. His is a variant common to those who have lived away and/or been highly educated. The accent can be a lot stronger than his. His mother is displaying her 'telephone voice' - something all Orkney folk have when talking on the phone to non-Orcadians: we all realise we can be hard to understand!

Broad Scots ??? Somehow I don't think so If he spoke 'broad Scots' then no-one in the house would understand him far less the viewers south of the border.

Agreed. A friend married a woman from the Shetlands, and sometimes I had great difficulty understanding a word she said. Cameron's accent is quite soft compared to the broader ones that exist up here. I like it, certainly much nicer than the Glaswegian I speak.

Orkney was populated by norwegians and the language still has a lot of old words from 'Old Norse'.

In fact they had theor own langage called 'Norn' which died a few hundred or years ago..

A number of words, phrases and indeed the structure of Orcadian dialect still contain remnants of Norn, with words like:

Felkyo - meaning "witch"
Speir - meaning "to ask"
Kye - meaning "cattle"

A few tiny written fragments exist, such as the Norn version of the Lord's Prayer shown below:
