My Prestige Hi-Dome seems to be coming to the end of its useful life. New seals don't solve its leakiness anymore, even though I've carefully smoothed the rim of the pot. Maybe it is distorted a bit? It has been used often for 15 years.

Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a new one, possibly a Kuhn Rikon, which looks pretty good.

Anyone got one of those? Or recommend another which I may have missed.

Mine was second hand when I got it, so it might be 100 years old for all I know.

Anyways, I've treated myself to a five litre Kuhn Ricon - only £55 with free shipping from Partridges.

Seemingly, the fuel savings made by using a pressure cooker can amount to quite a bit if this article can be believed.

Tower pressure cooker. It was only 15pounds from TG Hughes. Does the job for me.

Although they are out of stock at the moment, QVC will soon be selling a "Cooks Essentials" 6.5 litre quick cooker. We use ours everyday. It comes with a locking lid (for pressure cooking), a plastic lid for storing leftovers in the fridge, AND a glass lid for using as a normal casserole in the oven. Around £35 I am told, but as I said, they are out of stock at the moment.

Thanks for the suggestions.

However, my lust for a Kuhn Ricon had gotten the better of me and I'd ordered one before I had a chance to get many replies.

I'm expecting it to be delivered on Thursday - and I'm all excited. Well - as excited as you can get about a pressure cooker. Maybe I should get out more?

I find it odd that there seem to be millions of people raving about slow cookers but relatively few speak in favour of pressure cookers, despite their great advantages. Retaining vitamins, low energy use, making cheap meat tender and nutritious, etc.

Fashion, I suppose?

Someone asks me to purchase one a few months ago, I found it to be a very hard item to locate.

I had a pressure cooker years ago and used it a lot, can't remember why it fell out of favour but decided a few months ago that it might be useful to have a new one. My OH bought me one for Xmas, along with a load of other stuff and he got me a WMF Perfect Plus pressure cooker - bit pricey for some I know, but its absolutely wonderful. I've used it several times a week since Xmas and I'm really pleased with it.

My mum has one too, and i think the 25 years is why they went bust, such a shame

*edit* i was told they had gone bust, but they are still for sale in argos.

I am sure that they did go through a very bad patch, and may have been close to going bust. They now seem to be part of the Meyer Group

And from that website:

In 1997 one of our affiliates purchased the Prestige brand name. For over 50 years the Prestige brand had become synonymous with household cooking in the UK and many export markets. Since the acquisition Prestige has been re-established and re-invigorated as a major brand of products known for their quality, performance and value. The Prestige brand now embraces cookware, bakeware, kitchen utensils and is a growing brand in the small domestic appliance category.

This post is just to say thank you to all who replied and give a short review of my new Kuhn Rikon.

I ended up with a more expensive model than I ordered, 'coz they'd run out out of the model I asked for. Still, for £64, with no shipping costs, it's a lot cheaper than the average price for that model (£85 plus shipping).

It's smaller than my Prestige but weighs more I think - due to being partly stainless steel instead of aluminium alloy.

Despite being careful with it, the stainless steel now has marks which disfigure its appearance. However, I won't be putting it in my display cabinet, so that makes little difference.

The first thing I made in it was a beef casserole with braising steak. I followed a recipe in my old Prestige booklet which recommends 20 minutes on high. It was far too long, the steak had disintegrated by the time I opened the cooker.

The only other recipe I've tried was pea and ham soup, which was delicious.

I like the KR pressure cooker. It comes to pressure much faster than the Prestige (don't quite know why) and only needs the lowest gas setting to keep the pressure. Very easy to clean as well.

If you have been, thanks for reading.
