I downloaded an album from MSN - it downloaded fine, I copied it to my MP3 player and copied it onto a memory stick. I then went to play the album on my pc and it comes up with a message saying "Windows Media Player cannot play, synchronize, burn a protected file because an error occurred while verifying the licence". The files on my MP3 player won't play either and I get the licence message when trying to play it from the memory stick. It also won't let me copy onto a CD. Could anyone here please advise me how on earth I am supposed to play these files - I basically have a downloaded album which won't play on any media!!

Where exactly did you download it from?

Was it a legit site or just some file posted by A. N Other internet user?

Sounds as though the file has DRM (Digital Rights Management) on it. This is designed to stop you playing material obtained without paying the copyright holder. Plus it can prevent you playing the file on anything other than your computer or burning it to CD.

If you did not obtain the file from the "correct" source you won't have the necessary licence that allows you to use it. If you did get it from a legit source then the download may have screwed up. In which case you may have to contact the site you got it from for advice.

I downloaded it from MSN Music - I think there must be a problem with the files (as you suggested) as the licence info says it can be played / downloaded to MP3 an unlimited no. of times and copied to a CD ten times (I also have a DRM compatible player). I just wondered if I'd done something daft - not used downloads much as not long had broadband. I've e-mailed MSN now to see what they say.
