Which handset for phone and email with WiFi?
I've got my (Orange) contract up for renewal in a couple of weeks so I'm considering what handset to go for.
Is it so hard to get a phone that works great as a phone, has WiFi capability and also QWERTY input so replying to emails isn't a chore? I came up with a short list and the iPhone seemed to be the one but since learning you can't get MMS on the thing, plus O2 hike up the tariffs, it's pretty much ruling that out. The N95's got pretty much everything I want and more, but no QWERTY keypad. The Samsung F700 as pretty much everything too, but no WiFi. A camera would be nice too, at least 3.2MP if I get a choice... Surely one manufacturer out there must do an all in one device? |

Yeah the N95 (8GB model) is pretty much #1 on my list.
If I can't get it at renewal with Orange then I'll move to O2, which would be a shame as I'd miss the Dolphin tariff I'm on. |

What about the Nokia E61i?
QWERTY key board, wi-fi, email and at blistering 3g speeds. The camera is only 2mp though. http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4368371 |

Hmm, that might do the trick! What's the chances of getting that FOC on a contract or for minimal outlay though?
EDIT - looks like I can get that as a direct upgrade... tn2000, have you personally used this handset before? What's it like as a phone? |

Lol, will do.
I had a play with a few Blackberry's recently and I quite like the models with the roller ball, but overall, the units felt a bit cheap. |

I am now using a Sony Ericsson W960i with push email using ActiveSync to a Microsoft Exchange Server and it works very well over 3G or WLAN (which is the SE term for WiFi).
You do need to be using an Exchange Server to use ActiveSync. I am going to write up a description on how to setup ActiveSync for the W960i in my blog http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/blog.php?u=46607 |

Well it's been a few weeks and my supposed "renewal date" came and went. Apparently it's now May when I'm able to break free from Orange's hold on me, February was just the date I could buy a new handset...
So by the time I am finally in a position to choose, the N95 8GB will probably be replaced by the N96, the iPhone will be in v2 mode and Samsung will have some amazing mind-controlled interface on their new handset. |

Wi-Fi And a not too bad 2mp camera. It's a great phone. |

there are a few to look at, but you will have to buy sim free (not sure whether that is what you are looking for.
there is the Asus M530W - although it only has a 2mp camera, it has wifi, bluretooth, 3g, two cameras (one forward facing) runs windows mobile 6 standard - has a qwerty keyboard. this one being £200 sim free. then the MWg UBiQUiO 501 smartphone, same as above, full qwerty keyboard, 2mp camera, runs windows mobile 6, bluetooth, wifi (can be used with skype so free calls) 2.5inch colour tft screen. Again sim free @ £189. the only network branded (except 3) smartphone i have found on the market is the Samsung i600 which is on Orange -not sure of the cost tbh (it may be free) again, like the other two, it has a qwerty keypad, windows mobile 5 with free update to mobile 6. This one only has a 1.3MP camera. If you were to buy this one sim free, it would cost somewhere around the £205 mark. |

I would say BlackBerry all the way, either the 8120 or 8320 if you want full keyboard, have another play with one, certainly wouldn't say they feel cheap, would say solid and have lowest return rate in the industry

htc kaiser sounds like the best bet. its got exactly what you need specs wise , plus a few extras thrown in. you have to ask yourself if you will be happy with windows mobile. I only used a k800i before I got my orbit 2 last week but im loving it (this post is being written on it as I speak)

nokia n95 if a very good option although so is the htc kaiser sometimes known as the tytn 2.
Both phones are very powerful for email the htc wins hands down, the abilty to creat documents etc is good as well with the qwerty keyboard. its size may well put you off though finally the htc touch dual kind of a comprimise device no wi-fi but if you have unlimited data the hsdpa more than makes up for it (i never use the wifi on my n95). Should also mention the original htc touch, although it has no keyboard and the basic keyboard is naff you can put in pocketcm keyboard its a free download and rarely need to use the stylus, the screen is very good with the touch control, biggest downside is that it's only 2g but if you use wifi a lot then that doesnt matter I had one and must say its a cracking little phone but i needed 3g and so went n95 before the kaiser and touch dual came out would swop it for a touch dual tommorow if I had the chance (14 months to wait though. The n95's email is pretty poor without addon software. http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch_dual.htm http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_tytn_II.htm http://www.nseries.com/index.html Links to all the websites with details of each phone. Dont even consider the iphone its a gimmick and not a true smartphone rather more a fashion phone. Htc for the best email, n95 all round great phone Last edited by stevej26uk : 04-03-2008 at 01:41. No it's not. He said he wanted a QWERTY keyboard.
As i said the n95 is a good all rounder, the htc devices which are availble on all networks offer the best for a keyboard input and email. |

my htc s620 fits the bill.
qwerty. wi-fi mp3 web (not as wizzy as the i-phone) camera 1.3meg mms video voice dialing voice memo recorder sync with outlook contacts very slim, fits neatly in shirt pocket, buttons small but easy to use. niggles wi-fi drains the battery in 18 hours. can't dim screen at night.. makes a good torch! fat battery wony fit in desk/car cradles volume "Joggr" wont work if its trying to save power, only works after a key is pressed |

Cheers all.
Ricardodaforce - I'll check the Pearl out now. Colleagues have got several other Blackberry models, some with the middle scroll ball, some without and they get on well with them, although they're only used for emails. bluechang - Sim free isn't ideal but no real problem, I'll just choose a popular (with eBay) handset and use the money towards the sim-free handset. I suppose it all comes down to my priorities and if I'm honest, the handset will need to be a phone first and foremost. A camera is probably slightly more important than emails - I say that because no phone camera is THAT good, but they mostly do the job. Plus I send a few MMS messages so wouldn't want to lose that ability. And regarding emails, I'm pretty much always at a PC but I would like the ability to check - and reply whilst I'm away from the desk. After that, there's no preference for OS, whatever does the job will suffice. Even though I know every time I reply to an email using ABC input I'll be cursing the interface, I think the N95 is probably the best I could hope for. Until the iPhone sorts out MMS that is
