Synchronising music and Ipod
nimh999
27-01-2008
I have two computers and five people use them. The music on the two is fragmented and duplicated here, there and everywhere.

I have just bought an Ipod and showing duplicate files in ITunes is an option but it looks longwinded if I am using it correctly because it seems as though each file needs to be deleted manually.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding software or methods where I could synchronise all the music and remove duplicate files on the two computers?

Thanks in advance.

You would need to identify all the music which will be be in various folders in various formats. You also need to accommodate the situation where file A is the same as file B even though they are called different things.

If you can locate all the music, you can use the command window to create 2 text files of all the music files on each pc, dump that into a spreadsheet (or database) and compare the 2.

start - run - cmd - enter(to get the command window)
to navigate to the correct directory once the command window is running, use the cd command (use help cd for more information).
dir >musiclist.txt to create a text file in the current directory.

Is a good music management tool. There is duplicate management in there. I used it when I tidied up all my MP3's and it's a very nice piece of software.

If you're trying to do it over two computers you either need to network them so the software can see all the files or resort to something a bit more manual such as whats posted above ....

tealady. Thanks for the reply but this one goes way over my head and so for the time being I will give it a miss.
