i want a better digital camera
heatherm

at the moment i have a panasonic tz1 - which i love - it has 10x optical zoom, and you are able to zoom in and out while video-recording. My only negative comment about it is that it is only 5MP.

can anyone recomend a camera which has a higher MP than 5, but still retaining the 10x optical zoom, and the ability to zoom in and out while recording.

Also, i dont want a huge SLR camera, just a small, fit in the palm of your hand one.

not asking for much am i???

oh, and it cant cost a fortune either

TZ3?

If you're happy with the camera otherwise, why do you want more than 5mp?

Unless you're doing a lot of cropping or printing poster size prints, the extra mp won't really make a lot of difference. On standard 6x4 / 7x5 / 8x6 prints, the photos will look much the same assuming the quality of the original image captured is good.

i had thought of the tz3, but you cant zoom in and out while filming, otherwise i would have def grabbed this one.

i take a lot of pics and vids at the gigs i go to, and they are then put onto the bands website - i am a perfectionist when it comes to my pics and i always want better than what i have at the mo.

I had just presumed to have a camera that was a higher MP would mean my pix would be better quality, or does that only come into effect when printing them off?

More mp doesn't mean better pictures. A good quality (ie. good lens & sensor) 5mp camera will take better pictures than a garbage 10mp one.

It's the quality of the optics you want to look at first. Panasonic stuff tends to be pretty decent.

If its gigs you mainly want to use it for, I reckon you should be looking for good zoom and good low light performance above anything else.

In which case, a dSLR is going to out-perform every compact out there (without exception) and be considerably better than pro-sumer super-zooms as well.

Fujis tend to have good low light performance but you'd end up with a bigger camera to retain your 10x zoom.

The Panasonic FZ50 would be another one. Excellent optics, excellent zoom and the zoom is manually controlled so you can use while recoding in movie mode.

Bulkier than the TZ's but not quite as big as a dSLR + lenses. Not cheap either.

have just had a look at that one, sounds great except for the size - see those people that say size doesnt matter its too big just to sit in the hand isnt it?!

if its only prints the MP size effects then perhaps i am just as well sticking with what i've got? and saving the money for something else?

just out of interest - for low lighting, moving, pictures, what settings would people recommend?

I have a Sony Cyber-shot camera. 7.2 Mega pixels. I can recommend it.

Yes, I can second that. Great little camera. Can also use it under water with the sports pack. We took some great pics last summer in the sea in Gozo.

the Canon S5IS? 12x optical zoom and 8 megapixels

I have the previous model to the S5IS (the S3).

It's similar to the FZ50 I suppose. It's a bulkier camera but you do get good performance from it. The anti-shake is very good, the optics are excellent. Movie mode is fantastic, the quality you can capture is very good, you can zoom during recording and it has stereo mic input and wind noise filter to clean up the sound a bit while recording. Low light performance is good, but not class leading.

In lower light though, I'd suspect the FZ50 and the top end Fuji pro-sumers are maybe very slightly better ..... not much in it though.

You can pick up the S3 for reasonable prices since the S5 came out and it's still a good camera. Well worth a look.

I dunno which model of Sony the other two posters are referring to but all the models I can find at 7.2mp are 3x zoom compacts which wouldn't be a great choice for what the OP uses it for. The TZ1 she already has is probably better.

thanks everyone - i have had a look at those models, and to be honest i think i might stick with the one i have got - it appears to be smaller in size than these ones, and if the MP quality only comes into effect when printing pics off, then i think i am as well saving my money just now, and keeping with the panasonic tz1.
