Following on from the great 80s thread with the same theme...

The careers of superstars pop act like The Spice Girls, Westlife, Take That, grunge legends like Nirvana get attention quite frequently on forums. But what about the bands that were never iconic but where still great? The unique acts and the one hit wonders?

All hail the low profile acts of the 90s! What were your faves?

I love this from the very early 90s: Banderas - This Is Your Life

Tanya Donnelly. One of the great female singer/songwriters of recent times and is criminally forgotten.

Belly - Feed The Tree

Belly - Slow Dog

I've had the pleasure of seeing her live a few times. A true 'lady' of rock.

Charlie Parker, charlie Brown, Leslie Crowther, Come on down!

I liked the Beloved, I think they got some unfair criticism. Sweet Harmony was the song everyone was shagging to into 92

I was massively into the Britpop thing of the mid-90's and am still stuck there in many ways!

Anyway my favourite band at the time (after Oasis, obviously) were Space. Proabably best known for 'Female of the Species', they did so much more! There was 'Avenging Angels', 'The Ballad of Tom Jones' (which was a duet with Cerys Matthews) and three great albums, and they recorded another one that was never released!

A fantastic band, very underrated.

I watched one of those Top 100 programmes on CH4.......think the theme was 'worst 100 songs'..........

Apparently the Vanilla 'project' was some record producers bet that he could get a few mingers, record an annoying but catchy pop song and have a hit with it.........don't know whether the story is apocryphal though............

Wasn't Pete Waterman involved in that?

the word "Worst" and "Pete Waterman" never seem to be to far away from each other.

And that's the reason I saw Nirvana at that festival. I didn't know who they were at the time, I was just waiting for Chapterhouse to come on

Also on the bill that year were the long forgotten and very underrated Catherine Wheel.

That is a nice song. It does only ever seem to crop up as a "forgotten gem" though.

I didn't realise most people had forgotten Space! I loved them. I quite liked Hepburn because of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer connection.

Lauren Laverne's band Kenickie seem to have been all but forgotten. I quite liked this track of theirs:

One I remember because of my parents record collection is Dina Carroll. She did have a a good voice.
