im obsesssed with making the stuff! its soooo easy to make and it tastes bloody lovely! does anyone else make their own bread?

Yes, in a bread maker though! Much better for you. BTW - I went to Ireland on a course with work a few years ago - lunches were open sarnies on soda bread - lush! Will you share the recipe with me? and also, how fattening is it compared with white bread? AND what do you serve it with?

cut in half, fry in frying pan, then fill with egg,sausage and bacon

I bought it once when it was reduced and I tried making tuna sandwitches and cheese sandwitches and I really didnt like it at all, it tasted weird. I thought maybe soda bread was for sweet things like jam?

Soda bread isn't something to use for a sandwich. Most people over here fry it or toast it

I've never made my own, but I love M&S brown Irish soda bread. My favourite way to eat it is with just a little butter on it, or with banana.

I love irish soda bread. i used to get it often in San Francisco. (there's a lot of irish in San Francisco).

Any good recipes? (Certainly can't find it where I am located...)

This is how my Mother makes it.

450 g/1 lb plain flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp salt
about 400 ml/14 fl oz buttermilk
butter, to serve

Preheat oven to 180CC/350F. Mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt in a bowl. Make a well and Pour the buttermilk in. Using a large spoon, gently and quickly stir the liquid into the flour. It should be soft but not sticky. Place in a 900 g/2 lb non-stick loaf tin and bake for 45 minutes until the loaf sounds hollow when turned out of the tin and tapped. Put on a wire rack to cool.

Hahaha, that sounds so gross. Tuna and soda?? ERGH.

I love soda and melted cheese. Or a soda melt of you will:

Chop up mushrooms and bacon, fry off in pan, slice soda, put mushroom mix on top, cover wwith grated cheese and grill until cheese is melted. Delish.

For some reason I always eat soda melts with thousand island sauce. Dunno why.

I must say you's are all so health, 9 out of 10 Irish people eat there soda like this with Potato bread, bacon, egg, sausage. Fried black/white pudding and tomatoe also optional, Note: the heart shaped soda for Valentines day

That is exactly how I eat it.. only very occasionally though. My dad is northern Irish and they eat it loads over there..

It is lovely in a fry up.. yum

My parents are Irish so I love proper home made soda bread, but it never tastes right unless I'm eating it in Ireland. Weird.
